How do you answer The Big Question? ("Why?")

"Because it's easier to put up with the tedium of obtaining a permit and of carrying concealed than to deal with the possible aftermath, should I need it and not have it."

I've have my 15minutes of fame TWICE for being in confrontations with violent criminals. Both times it was all over the Phildelphia news for weeks. Everyone and their dog knows why I believe in owning guns. My attitude on assualt rifles changed after the first incedent and my attitude about CCW was changed after the second.

I was nieve.

concealed carry in Utah

hi, my name is bobby. I live in TN. Thanks Becky for posting this for me.
Why conceal carry? Answer: I'll try to keep this reasonable. I've been carrying since I was 18. I'm 43, no permit. I guess the best answer would be, "well, I'm gonna carry and it's the law to be taxed, documented, marked, discriminated against, regulated, etc, etc, etc. This has been one of my most thought about subjects in my life. I believe it all boils down to confiscation. All the arguments and laws that are against the original US Constitution, (or common sense) are null and void. There's just too much chaff and distraction on this simple subject. I believe that I should not be taxed or regulated or infringed on this one
God-given right and responsibility. We all should just say NO!! AW ban, CCW etc, etc. Until we do, we are all gonna keep paying a heftyier and heavy price until we can't pay no more. Bottom line is, it's the law to have a permit to carry "that's your answer". Thanks for letting me post this. Semper Fi, Bobby

Why?

Because, I chose NOT to be a victim.

Besides, my PRIVELAGE (permitted CCW is not a right) to carry concealed, supercedes your need to know.

Why do you ask? If they seem sincere in the query, they get a polite answer, including:
For the same reason I have fire extinguishers in my home.
For the same reason I wear my seatbeat.
I was a Boy Scout. Ultimately, because I'm responsible for my own safety.

If they're snippy and/or condescending, I ask them why they don't, and then the fun begins.

Why do you own guns?

Because I'm one of the good ones. Which means: I was raised by christian standards, I'm peaceful, I respect my fellow, I served to protect my country and my people (and still do, trained for it today), I'm an active blood donor and a potential organ donor (have to get registered for donation bone marrow soon), the last time I used brute force against someone was during my trip to Norway in 2000 (to help a bus driver), the second last time must have been in the late '80s.

And surprisingly it's the only argument no anti so far could counter. ;)

Does anything else need to be said???

:D

Bobby for President!!!

just say, If a crazy man comes in here and I don't have a gun, How am I going to shoot him?

"Because I'm not a rich liberal who can afford bodyguards and a guilt trip."

T. Stahl,

For the hell of it, could you give us details?

I'm interested in how Euros actually manage to defend themselves and not get jail time for it.

As amusing and cute these replies are, I don't think they will help Average Guy get a CCW. You can't just walk up and give a wise-guy answer and expect to be issued a CCW. Right or wrong, it's just not the prudent thing to do. It's easy for us to say 'It says so in the Constitution', but really doesn't help our friend much.

If you were serious about getting it, speak to others in your jurisdiction who have gotten them. See how they got theirs and see if you can make minor adjustments in your lifestyle to give yourself a fair shot.

Moot point, since he has had it for a few years, judging by his initial post.

Moreover, these replies aren't being tendered to authority figures, but to busybodies.

"Because I know that there is the "element of society" that cares nothing for the sanctity of life, and would gladly stomp both of us to death for nothing more than a few dollars, some cold beer, or their next drug fix."

After seeing this first hand, two times and having a family member murdered for 60 dollars and some cheap jewelry. I completely agree with what you said.

By the way the POS strangled her with a toaster cord. She was mentally disabled (Down Syndrome) Just started living alone at the age of 30 or so and she had a job. She was stalked and murdered.

She was a soft target. There is really no way I think she good have protected herself.

Humanity has good and evil. Ill be ready for the evil part of it.

Easy question to answer. On the practical side, I can cite dozens of news reports in my area alone, of robberies and assaults and carjackings. Many were a success for the criminals. Others resulted in a citizen with a CCW permit stopping the crime and in some cases saving lives. It seems a simple equation to me. Unarmed people get robbed, raped, beaten up, killed. Armed people have the means to prevent this.

On the philosophical side, the right to self-defense is a necessary part of a civilized society. It predates the Constitution, it predates the Magna Carta. Self-defense has been accepted as justified use of force all the way back to the Egyptians, if not before. If you may not defend yourself against common criminals, you have anarchy. If you may not defend yourself against oppressors, you have tyranny.

Fortunately, I live in a "shall issue" state. I don't have to say why, the state has to say why not or issue the permit. In fact, the Florida CCW application says something like "I certify that I wish to carry a concealed weapon as a means of lawful self-defense". Period. Lawful self defense is clearly defined in the Florida Statues, and the CCW application comes with a copy of the relevant extracts, so I and the State both know what we're agreeing to.
