How do you answer The Big Question? ("Why?")

In Georgia, they don't ask you why you want the permit. They just give you the forms and tell you to go see the deputy to get fingerprinted. It's assumed that everyone has a good reason, namely, the right to keep and bear arms :).

Hello All.

I reply with the question, "Do you vote?" When they (usually) say yes, I hit 'em with "Why?" Those with even minimal brains will usually catch on, and I really don't worry about those that don't.

I think the best way to answer that question is with another much more profoundly important question:

"Why do you think it is not your responsibility to protect your own life?"

I've been posting this link a lot: http://www.rkba.org/comment/cowards.html

Pretty much covers all the major aspects of why I own and carry firearms.

Why?

Same reason there's a fire extinguisher in my kitchen and garage
Same reason I wear my seat belt
Same reason there's a tool kit in the trunk of my car
Same reason I put on sun block at the beach
Same reason I buy life insurance, health insurance, full coverage car insurance, home owner's insurance, etc.
Same reason I get a yearly checkup at doctor and dentist
Same reason I put a little money away in savings
Same reason I watch what I eat
Same reason I don't ask armed people intrusive, personal questions
;)

Same answer I would give if asked "why own a gun?"

It's better to have it and not really need it, than to really need it and not have it!

Because we live in a world in which evil exists. And it doesn't just show itself in the vicinity of police officers. It enters the workplace, the home, and even your churches without a moments notice. My life, the lives of my family, and the lives of my close friends are of the utmost importance to me. That's why.

"Mind your own business," is my general reply to any gun question from any of the sheep.

I asked this question over at TFl a while back and got some wonderful answers...but I can't find the thread now. If anyone can find it, a link would be greatly apreciated.

My wife always used to ask me "do you really think you are going to NEED a gun just to go get some milk?" "No, but if I thought I would need a gun, I would stay at home...do you put on your setbelt only when you think you are going to get into a wreck?

I would point out that "why?" is not an appropriate question and say I don't feel I need to justify exercising my rights. I speak freely because I want to, I go to church because I want to, I vote because I want to and I carry because I want to.

I like the simple answer, "Because I can." I remember seeing in a post somewhere in these forums about avoiding a job move to a state with a weak RKBA movement. I'm up for transfer this summer, and the only thing I told my detailer was "Think hot and muggy."

Mr HS/LD why do you carry a concealed weapon?

For lawful protection of my person or another's person or property.

Regards,
HS/LD

I've never been asked, but if I ever am, the answer now will be:

"For the same reason I always wear my seatbelt. You just never know. . ."

Thanks to whoever offered that one first.

Actually, it's pathetic that we have people around who would ask that question. Come the big cataclysm, they'll all be dead or stripped, beaten, used, worked hard and driven across the land like beasts.

Why?

Because many Americans died protecting the freedoms the United States of America affords to it's citizens. Why waste that gift?

Quick scan & I've never been asked. I tend to surround myself with those who already know the answer.

I mayhap just give a whistful scan towards the beautific until the questioner decides it's no longer worth the "trouble."

Answer: There are people who have no regard for my peaceful existance, nor yours. I have made my choice about how to deal with that fact. It is up to you to make your own choices. Bye the way what are they??? This at least should start their thought processes on the subject!

It seems to me like a LEO pulling you over and asking "Where are you going?"

Picture me pointing straight over the hood and saying "That way.":D
