How do you break the stereotype of gun owners?

I would like nothing more than to end the stereotype about gun owners, yet it remains because the liberal leaders, the antis, and the media perpetuate it. I would love nothing more than for the left to give up on gun control, but I don't believe it for a second. Liberal gun owners?! Welcome! Gay gun owners?! Welcome! That doesn't mean I agree with liberal agenda or support gay marriage. The common enemy is more dangerous than the differences. They are ruthless and will lie and demonize you in a heartbeat. They don't give up, either. As far as other politicians go, Republicans generally support gun freedom, but the exceptions are too numerous to keep track of. The perception of the NRA being a right wing organization is an invention of the previous Clinton administration. The NRA, like most gun owners, is centered on many different political backgrounds with only one purpose, nd the conflict often makes it less effective. I happen to fit the "negative stereotype", that being White, male, comservative, and lower middle class. I prefer military surplus firearms, especially full power semiautomatics with removable magazines. I oppose the continued travesty of the federal government in restricting to the point of near banning full automatics. I also oppose background checks and other "sensible gun control laws". The NRA has been caving in for yeares and a total gun ban has progressed in slow motion. That being said, I don't apologize for my interest in firearms, and never will. To purposely avoid the stereotyoe through "lip service". You won't convince anyone and you won't avoid the stereotype either. People aren't convinced by meekness or condescention, they are convinced by enthusiam and passion. I don't intentionally force people to accept me and I don't advertize, yet people know eventually and they can take it or leave it. Which is the point anyway, the media isn't ever going to change their perception, so they should be replaced. Most, not all, alternative media supports gun freedom. When they do, we should support them as we would anyone who supports gun freedom. The liberal leaders currently give lip service to the RKBA, but I don't believe them for a minute. Clinton made a carreer of classifying guhn owners as right wing nuts, and Mr's Clintin hasn't done anything to cause me to doubt her support. At the same time, few Republican candidates, other than Ron Paul, has made a commitment to restoring the RKBA. I keep hoping for gun control to become an issue, but most candidates, prefer to keep it unmentioned. I only hope that gun owning Democrats will raise the issue as much as gun owning republicans or gun owning independants do. I am tired of presidents like the last three doing things like using regulations, executive orders, and promoting laws that limit the rights of gun owners or make it difficult, expensive, or illegal to aquire firearms.

I don't.
One cannot change people places and things.
Folks are going to think and stereotype as they please, they always have and always will.

Being the Southern Gentleman I am, sometimes its best to Tump out the lies, mis-quotes, skewed statistics, and all out on the table and call the Anti's out and make 'em fess up and look others in the eyeball to verify and cite sources for what they are attempting to do to Gun Owners.

Now I admit getting a kick out of Antis Stepping-n-Fetching and looking for the door as they haul butt back the way they came.

Then again I am one to shake my head and question if someone has any sense trying to eat fried chicken with a knife and fork.

Some folks just ain't raised right , some foods like fried chicken and BBQ 'pposed to be eat with the fingers and hands...

Anti's, <shakes head> they probably think Saucered-n-Blowed is something dirty we do in the South too...

hehehe...

Let's see.

I'm sure there's a stereotype hiding in there somewhere.

Let me know if you find it.

~~

I make it a point that when I am around people who know that I am a gun lover that they realize my insistence in safety and proper gun handling techniques.

The stereotypes are a bit of a mixed bag for me.

- I come from a liberal, anti-gun family, and live in a liberal state.
- Former political liberal, now leaning towards libertarianism.
- White, Germanic/Scandinavian/Scots-Irish heritage
- Agnostic, but in my more emotional moments, I've been known to pray to Odin or Thor. They've never answered, as far I can tell, although I am still alive. Maybe that was the answer. Most of the religion-linked issues I'm pretty liberal on, as they aren't issues for me: Pro-choice, no problem with gay marriage. Basically, my philosophy is, "Leave folks alone, let 'em do their thing unless it's hurting somebody."
- Rural-raised, but involuntarily an urbanite (I hate city living)
- Some college education, currently in progress.
- I drive a truck, but it's a little Chevy that I like because the cab is roomy, and I'm a big guy. I used to drive a Subaru Outback... I loved that car.
- I smoke cigarillos and drink whiskey (pretty buzzed right now, Maker's Mark is good stuff and goes down smooth). I have a growing appreciation for beer, but it's not my drink of choice. Certainly no beer cans in my truck bed... lots of energy drink cans in the cab, though.
- I don't hunt, although I wouldn't mind learning. Not a priority, though.
- Not former military, nor intending to join up. I've noticed that a disproportionate number of posters here, and gun owners I've found in general, have been current or former military. Not me. Nor am I an LEO, although I had a brief career as a security guard that changed the way I think on levels I'm only beginning to understand.
- Cordially detest NASCAR, and sports in general. I think professional athletes are overpaid, and have become the objects of a most unwholesome hero-worship by many people. I'll watch football, if there's nothing else on, but that's it.
- No rebel flags on my car or in my house... not because I have anything against the Stars and Bars, but mostly because I've no claim to the heritage, myself. If I had family in the War Between the States, they likely wore blue.
- I love to read, mostly science fiction, and plan to try my hand at writing the stuff. Part of what influenced me to become interested in firearms (and affected my political views) were writers like Robert A. Heinlein.
- No inbreeding as far as I know. However, I seem to be coincidentally descended from Clan Gordon from both sides of my family. They tell me that we had castles in the old country, and that Charles George "Chinese" Gordon was a relative. Well and good, but Americanization has stripped the family of any gentry status we had, and so much the better. Just regular folks now, but I have the name, and the history. That's something.

Stereotypes typically become so because there's a grain of truth at the core of them. Problem is, that grain of truth is based on perception, and the causes of them are rarely well-understood. These days, communication is so widespread, so instantaneous, so available, that's it's put paid to that core truth behind a number of stereotypes. I hope I live to see the day these stereotypes are forgotten relics, fallen by the wayside.

I actually think the NRA is doing quite well in dispelling the stereotype (although I am a bib overall wearing, tractor drivin' white boy, and I don't have all my (real) teeth).

However, the media likes to promote the redneck gun lovin' hillbilly. That's their ignorance and one of the reasons they have such little credibility anymore.
Of course, we promote that stereotype too, in a way. How many of you folks have used "Bubba" for a guy who tricked out his rifle?

Stereotypes will never be broken. For every person you dislike for having a stereotype you yourself stereotype someone. For instance, I've lived in the city my entire life. I enjoy trips to the mall, I enjoy reading, although I'm agnostic I've studied many religions, I dress appropriate yet I do hunt, and I do watch Nascar yet I must be a hick. I've heard insinuations from many THR members that "huntin' rifles n' nascars is for 'em hillbillies!" that are at the same time trying to break a stereotype for their own petty cause...

Missing teeth seems to be coming up a lot. The chainsaw chain rule applies to humans too:

If you're missing more than three in a row or five total...

How do you break the stereotype of gun owners?
One educates the uneducated holder of such stereotypes, if one chooses to expand the effort. The ignorant, one should probably choose to ignore.

I consider George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and John F Kennedy to be "stereotypical" gun owners as history has proven. Pretty good company actually.

Oh boy, I think I reinforce the stereotype more than anything.

I'm White Anglo-Saxon Southern Protestant.
I think Nascar is cool even though I don't watch it.
I disagree with gay people on that issue, though I try to love them with the love of the Lord
I have worked in Residential construction on a good ole boy crew.
I think we should build the Wall.
I wish I owned a Ford Pickup with a gun rack.
I don't like Yankees (as a general principle)
I'm proud to be from South Carolina
--BUT I also lived abroad for four years and consider South Africa to be my second home. I've also traveled to West Africa.

I prefer Grand Prix F1 racing to the motorized circus maximus. Would love to race in one. What a kick that would be.
I have an Associates degree. Tried to do the school thing. Faced facts that academia and I just don't get along. Oh well. Really, if you have half a brain I think you can do okay on your own anyway.
Political views are pretty centrist. Though I do lean Republican.
I read everything from Atlantic Monthly to Mad magazine. Last book I have read was Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant.
Was raised a Protestant Christian but I consider myself agnostic. I believe in a higher power. I just don't think the human mind has a good grasp of whatever it is yet.
I am extremely taciturn about my firearms hobby. You always run into some arrested development knucklehead who will get the wrong idea. Before you know it the grapevine has you pegged.

So, how are you different from the stereotyped image the media and antis have of gun owners? That is, white, uneducated, poor, slob with a Confederate flag in his pickup truck plastered with NASCAR stickers and a bed full of empty beer cans.

I'm probably going to be in the minority here, it seems. But I have a better idea-- attack the stereotype itself.

Think about it for a minute.

We are so worried about {gasp} we should be associated with those poor, white, uneducated slobs....

The reasons for that desire is obvious-- I went through that in my youth. None want to be associated with what society deems to be "inferior" or distainful. We all want to be seen in the best light.

I, frankly, think we have a very skewed opinion of what that best light is.

The fact is that this has been going on as long as there has been urban and rural. The desire to distinguish predates the colonization of the New World and it still seems to be going strong today.

At 18 years old, I couldn't wait to get out of the rural world I lived in. I didn't want to be associated with those that this thread seems to be concerned with. I left. I got an education. I became successful in my career.

And I learned that it simply didn't matter in a lot of people's eyes. You can't run from your accent. Even though I've lived in 3 of the largest cities in the US over my career-- including NYC, I retained my southern accent. In the WTC, I heard the first usage of the term "Mississippi Goat-Roper" applied. Every single day that I lived in NYC, I got some kind of comment regarding my accent.

Now--at 36 years old, I've come appreciate my home and my heritage. When I decided to open my firm, I did it in the South. It really took Hurricane Katrina for me to see those "poor, uneducated slobs" in thier true light. They were the one that took it upon themselves to clear roads, to start developing some kind of normalcy. Those were the ones that ACTUALLY had the skills needed to use equipment that would get things going. I saw a lot of hard work out of those guys, and I saw a lot of caring and concern for those that could not do for themselves. I had some very nice guys RESPECTFULLY take the time to teach me how to do what they were doing so I could be useful. They, of course, ribbed me a little about not knowing things because I've been behind a desk most of my life. But it was always delivered with a big grin and a lot of patience. That is FAR more than I can say on the other side.

Sure, those guys probably have a beer can or two in the back of their truck. So freaking what? He probably enjoys a beer after working a 12-hour day on logging, loading, or whatever. So he is uneducated. So what... I know a LOT of people with Master's Degrees that couldn't find their butts with both hands even if they had a big-ole-butt map. Education comes in many forms. Some of those men have real technical skills that most of us will never have. They use those skills for a honest day's work.

So he may not have a lot of money. Does money define worth? I know a lot of poor people who are golden in spirit. I know a lot of rich persons that are horrible persons. Money has nothing to do with character.

Recently, there was a documentary on The History Channel entitled The True Story of the Hillbillies that discussed the history of the people of Appalachia. It was fascinating. I would think that we-- as liberty-loving people-- would exhalt those people who struggled against the encroachment of government and big-business practices of the early 20th century which were highly exploitive to the working-class persons. I would strongly recommend anyone to watch the documentary.

If you REALLY would like to examine the nature of class, geographic, and racial issue in our society as it pertains to the rural working class, take a look at this book:

The Redneck Manifesto by Jim Goad

http://www.amazon.com/Redneck-Manifesto-Jim-Goad/dp/0684831139

HOWEVER, be warned that the language in the book will make your eyes bleed. Without the language, however, the book could be considered a serious scholarly work on the topic. And yet, it would lose a lot of its "power" if the language WAS calmed down... so go figure. The book has 23 pages of bibliography and addresses the topic as it has evolved through the last several centuries.

I always wondered why someone would be so concerned about me, or you, having a gun. Do they think I'm going to shoot them out of the blue, just because I have one and they don't? I really don't get it. It speaks poorly for their views on human nature, restraint, motives and any concept of personal responsibility. If they refuse to become truly educated on the subject, what else can be done? That's the real task, isn't it?

Teach your children well.

I am a Jew from Chicago, Illinois. 21 years old. I moved down to Florida and i'm definitely not a redneck. I have some right wing views on certain issues, feel that illegal aliens should be deported, I don't have any problem with the confederate flag, I do not support gay marriage but what someone does in their own bedroom is their own business as long as it's not promoted to me or my kids.

I am against gun control in any form. No idea where this stereotype comes from, but it gets really irritating when someone says "Oh do you date your cousin?" or "Are you a Jesus freak and a redneck?" when I tell someone I own guns. Very annoying.

Also I don't see why people hate rednecks so much? Theres plenty in my area in the panhandle and they are some of the friendliest people I have met.

I grew up on a farm in Central Illinois...not so much redneck (in terms of knuckle dragging, green teethed) but more **simple** people...and I couldn't wait to get the heck out of there.

Now, trapped in the north shore suburbs of Chicago my wife and I find pleasure in going to my home town. A slower pace of life, relaxed, friendly people.

If the corporate job opportunities existed there, I would move to a smaller city. Would love to figure out my own business that was geography independent.

White. Married. 43 years old. 3 rifles , 3 shotguns , 6 pistols & a CCW. 2 large dogs. Not very friendly , but always polite. My fences are in better shape than my house.

I am the guy in the Ye Olde quaint New England fishing town turned suburb of Boston who is "local color" rather than "just passing through". My family has been here forever , pre-Revolitionary War , on this street.

Remember Robert Shaw's character " Quint" , in the movie Jaws ? That's me , on a good day.

I don't believe I've ever shouted, "Hey, y'all! Watch this!"

Of course, that's something many people only manage to do once. :scrutiny:

I'm 27.
I'm educated, BS in CS, NCSU.

I don't hunt.
I drink beer and whiskey... good old scotch :)
I believe in God, Country, and Family.
And I listen to country music :D

Am I a little bit country? You Bet!!!

It's all my mommie's fault. She gave me my first Daisy Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Six months later she got her PhD in Psychology--in 1942.

Hey, after 66 years, the gun thing is a hard habit to break, y'know?

So my teeth are plastic. They work.

Music? Hank Williams, Rachmaninoff, Mac Wiseman, Beethoven, Merle Haggard and Ravel. I don't like Berg or Sternberg or most modern so-called music. :D

Had my last fight in the spring of 1951, so I don't think I'm inherently violent.

Born and raised in Austintatious. Lived in, stationed in, or travelled a good bit in some twenty countries besides here in the U.S. I don't think I'm insular in my worldview. But I'm where I am by choice, not necessity. :)

Retired professional engineer. Environmentalist, as long as hard science and "true fact" are involved. Used to have enough of an IQ that I hit 96th percentile on the GRE, so I gotta think maybe I ain't all eat up with the stoopids.

And I have quail all over my porch...
