I'm looking for a vest or chest harness for extra mags. Any recommendations or alternatives for carrying extra mags? I also saw a east/west German pouch that might work as well I think in a Cheaper than Dirt ad. Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Kinda depends on where/for what purpose you are carrying them. South African Pattern 83 chest harness works pretty well for both AR and AK mags. The standard ComBloc 4 mag raindrop pouch will also work for both, and at $1.50 per, is a pretty cheap way to go. Several choices in higher end nylon, if you want to drop some $.

Anybody know a place online to buy them? The only stuff I can find are UK surplus shops... which sorta takes away the price benefit.

I've been wondering about this myself... and it seems like the South African Pattern 83 would actually be cheap enough for me to justify it.

Need more info:

What's cheap to you?
Did you mean to list AK and AR in the same rig? Cause they are very different sizes and shapes. So, do you need one rig for both?
What is the purpose? I mean, to carry a few for home SHTF situations, for range stuff, what? Do you mind looking excessively GI-Joe, and want it to be pretty slick and recreational/hidden, or kinda like being a home-commando (like many of us)?
How many mags do you want to carry? Need a dump pouch for empties?
Anything else? Need to carry water, radios, handgun ammo, holster...?

As you may have surmised, there are about 352 answers to this question. From old surplus LBV (from $14) to new chinese Cheaper than Dirt nylon (from $29) to a RACK with the sotech universal mag pouches (upwards of $150). There are also other paths, like an over-the-shoulder mag satchel, or even just sticking two mags in your back pockets.

You might try the SWAT shop for the pattern 83 stuff. With the recent scarcity of SADF gear you might be running into new production decent quality nylon prices though.

Your run of the mill $15 AK mag chicom chest rig will often accomodate stuffing 2x AR mags per pouch

You might try the SWAT Shop
My GAWD! Don't go there. My security software went nuts. It blocked 3 pop ups (not so bad) another 2 cookies (not really a big deal) and AN ACTIVE-X DOWNLOAD OF a really nasty version of spyware (totally unacceptable - only lowlife scumsucking pigs would do this - sorry but putting stuff on someone else's computer without asking ought to be a crime)!

I'm always looking for good online stores to buy stuff from but none that do what the Swat Shop does will ever get my money!

The SWAT shop may not have a high end web site, but he is a quality, consistent source for webbing others don't have....

top of the line stuff, used by the boys overseas. Brad (the owner) is ex-paratrooper and most of his customers ARE currently in the sandbox. Good prices, all sorts of interesting stuff stocked there.

I bought my AK chest mag pouch from him.

Even if you do not purchase any thing from lightfighter, join the forum and search to your heart's content.

Many questions have already been answered there.

Dunno why I said hip. BACK pocket. Most of my rifle shooting and class time has ended up being from pockets. It works fine.

When I am crazy its an Eagle Tac-1 vest modified with some pals webbing so I can stick on whatever mag pouch I want, or an SDS RACK with both SDS issue pouches and the 6-cell sotech universal pouch (which works great and is quit universal indeed).

Another really good choice, for more casual shooting (like, you don't want to wear a whole vest) is something like this:

Just wear the strap across your body. Works quite well, actually. I presume you can get one for AK mags.

Do join a more general geardo forum like lightfighter. Don't even have to post, just read; there are entire sections on this stuff.

I like that over the sholder case, i wil have to order one of those. Keep one one loaded up, grab and go. Anyone know if it attachs to the belt in any way to keep it from flopping around?
That speedloader pouch looks intriguing too, as it seems to hide most of the speedloader, unlike the majoirty of the leather ones Ive seen.

I had a Blackhawk Soviet-type chest pouch. Strap around your neck, just fling it on, and connect the strap across your back and tighten (takes 3 seconds).

Keeps the mags in front of you, handy and quick. Holds eight 30 rounders.

I really like these nylon ones with the silent clasp on them. This guy has good prices for new stuff, but I got all of mine for about $5/pouch on ebay a few years ago. Sturdy stuff and easy to customize to your own liking. Word to the wise, just go on and rip out those magazine dividers, they're a lot easier to use without them!

edit: whoop...Cheaper Than Dirt's got em - OD, used or black,new - for $6.97

That blade-tech thing is a good call. I actually have one in leather from... well, I don't know where. Bought it off Jim Crews who had some made up. With an AR, it can even be worn in the normal weak-side position, and you can sit in cars, etc. I do always use 20-round mags with ARs, however.

For everyone getting a vest, /please/ look harder than just blackhawk. For the same or not much more, you can get better gear. Of course, you can spend even more, but you don't have to.

Wish I could think of a good name for the over-the-shoulder thing. No description that doesn't involve hand gestures ever works.
