So how does THR decide what to buy next?

Do you have a list you follow to a T in the order of your purchases? You don't buy the second gun on the list until you've bought the first.

Do you have a list you use to guide you and buy whatever you find on the list when you find it.

Do you just wing it and buy whatever catches your eye.

I'm a broke college student, so my buying of guns is quite limited. I did, however, just buy my first handgun: a Px4 Storm. Still waiting on the amendment to be able to pick it up. (I love New York.)
Anyways, when I figure out where I'm living post-college, my plan is essentially to pick out what I want for my next gun, and put it on layaway. That way I'm on somewhat of a schedule and don't just decide to go buy a gun when I feel random urges. That being said, some ridiculous price on a refurb might make me change my mind.

I can afford about one per year right now due to school expenses, so when ever that time of year comes around (tax return time) I start looking and asking. This years choice came by recommendation of two family members (a 1911), so after test firing one of my uncles I'm sold on it (two more weeks!).

I have a list of "wants" that is more of a flexible guide than a checklist. it changes from time to time with some items bubbling to the top and old long term desires getting pushed to the back. Been wanting a 1874 Sharps replica in .45-70 for years had the money last month to get one but an older friend who is slowly divesting his lifetimes collection had a Bushmaster XM-15 (AR-15) that I couldn't pass up. so the sharps got bumped, again...

I have a mental list of firearms I want. The items on the list changes and so does the order in which I want them but it serves as a guide. I don't make any gun purchases without fully researching them either.

just what is on my mind that I like and of course that I can afford...not an actual list that I follow but there is a few wants

An AR in .50 Beowulf... :what:

Something with that much oomph might land me on the homeland security watch list...

But I don't have any money for something like that. I'm quite pleased with my little K-22............. until I get more money. :D

It depends on where you are. For your first few guns, it would be unwise to just wing it. Those who already have their base are in a different camp. Those who have a base as well as multiple layers of toys are on another planet.

I usually don't know that I want something until I see it for sale.
This happens to me a lot. I bought another Colt Woodsman last week. Didn't know I needed another one until I saw it for sale.
RIght now a Ruger LCP is on my list. But I'm not hot enough for one to pay MSRP and if Ruger doesn't hurry up and make them more readily available, I will probably decide that I don't need one and move on to something else.

I don't have an approach. I find one I want and save for it sometimes. A great deal comes along for something I want. I have money and I suddenly lust after a particular firearm. Rising prices cause me to try to get one collectible first. Depends. No point in running your life on a checklist if there isn't a good reason to.

I actually have three separate lists, one each for rifles, shotguns, and handguns. I don't follow it precisely and lately it's been whatever will be on a potential ban list, disregarding anything on the list that I think would "survive" a ban.

I have a very short list of wants... normally its just luck... IE I see it at a shop/show and want it.

Sometimes it's something I just see, usually like that with shotguns, or it's something that I research or look for a lot of opinions on like my SP101, XD9, and my Marlin 39A.

A lot of times, just browsing at the gun stores looking for ammo deals or something of that nature...usually a couple of things 'pop out' and catches the eye.Put it on a list, see if its affordable and something I really want or even better yet,a need.Going for an XD 357Gig and an RPK...but willing to pass up a PSL (price way to high).

I always keep an up-to-date (usually updated weekly, as my mind changes often) prioritized top 10 "needs/useful" (I use the term 'needs' loosely) and another "wants/fun" list on my computer. When I have a planned purchase coming up, I'll take the top 3 off the needs list and go shopping. If I happen to have some spare fundage lying around (not very often) and/or I know I'll be in an area where I'm highly suceptible to have a gun follow me home, my list is usually thrown out the window.

I love having lists. It makes things easy. It's also fun to let my "wild side" out and deviate from the list and occasionally make an impulse buy to spite my organized side.

We're not crazy. We swear.

It's on my desktop.
It's a Word document.
It's 42 KB.
It's called "The Sh*tlist".

:D

Organized by rifles, shotguns, revolvers, and autos. About 35 guns total. The next 10-12 things I intend to buy are a seperate list at the top of the page, including holsters, parts, etc.

There is also a List of stuff that is endangered that I need to buy before the election.

I gots a disease. :(

I jsut wing it.

My list is made up of guns I want to own, and if I see one, and have the money, I buy it.

I think the Sig P220 was at the top of the list with the last three purchases I made, which is why I dont bother trying to go in order. And I still dont have a P220, missed some good deals on a few though.

How about ask the wife how much can I spend now? then just spend what you want any way??? I really dont need any more I have one for everything I will ever do now.

No list. If I itch I buy. I'm into the ONE GUN A MONTH policy. Seems like I've been on that schedule lately. I have more guns than brains and enough to last a few life times. The 45 & 22 target guns are my weakness. A S&W 1911 is my next pick....but that can change without notice.

I think the biggest danger in collecting is impulse buys. So I do everything slow and calculated like Congress. I do make a list, and then in an ongoing effort I research the rifles, the prices, the pros and cons, and monitor my feelings about them. You would be surprised that you can talk yourself out of or into a certain rifle.

The absolute worst thing you can do is go to a gun shop and make a decision on a whim by window shopping (unless you have plenty of $$$).

I think a list works. It is part of the fun and helps you make better choices.

It really depends. The last few firearms I purchased were simply out of necessity. I needed a deer and hog rifle. So I bought one, Needed a squirrel and rabbit gun... so I bought one. Needed a duck and dove gun... bought one. Needed to practice at the range and didn't want to break the bank with .45acp... so I bought a Ruger MKIII 22/45.

I often enter gunshops with nothing but air in my cranium. I often leave with something I have no real need for. Essex

i usually have a general idea of what i want. i don't have a list per se but i will have a few guns floating around in my head that i want at a given time and i usually make my decision from that group.

have a wish list:
-Rugar 32 H&R stainless single six--one gets lonely by itself
-OMC 380/wood grips--regret trading the best point shooter i ever had
-Colt 1908--cause the 1903 misses its bigger brother
