How do you feel about lanyards?

Eli Wallach found a use for one in the absence of a holster. Found that a leather thong looped through a lanyard on his Colt SAA worked nicely when around his neck for quick drawing in TGTBATU. Of course, we're not doing much quick drawing.

Dang it. Now I am gonna have to watch it again next weekend.

After a career in the Infantry, I saw the utility of a lanyard. In combat, you definitely don't want to get separated from your weapon.

In a parachute jump, anything you want to keep needs to be tied on.

Now that I'm retired, I spend a lot of time on horseback, and a lanyard comes in handy there, too.

I've thought about picking up one. I trust my holsters- it is my hands that seem to get all fumble-y these days.

I don't ride horses, but I am with Vern about the combat utility. If I were still in the USMC and was going to be carrying a pistol into combat again, there would be no doubt that I would use the lanyard. I don't recall it being a requirement that we used them, but I certainly did. Never had an issue with retention thanks to the flap holster, but the lanyard gave me an extra sense of security.

Thinking about it, I made a lanyard out of tape and paracord for my pocket knife in those days, and that did keep me from losing my knife on more than one occasion. Ugly, but it worked. Once I switched to Spyderco, the hole was already there for a lanyard so no more duct tape, lol.

I've used one with my duty handgun. When you would be in serious trouble for losing a handgun, you do everything possible to keep it tied to you.

I've heard one-too-many stories of M9s found in the port-a-john (on the shelf or IN the toilet) to not want to risk it.

If I were to use one as a civilian, I would get one of the retractible ones that gives plenty of room for fully extended presentation and strong enough to retain your pistol if you drop it.
