How do you guys feel about Olympic Arms ARs?

Conqueror, I'll take that Colt for just a bit over $1200. where is it? Is there more than one?

there's a colt 6920 upper for $900 on arfcom EE right now.

you can get an essential lower for $100, parts kit for $70 or so and a tube and stock for $100. all you'd need then would be a BCG which is about $130

$1300 is a bit over $1200, but miles ahead of the oly

I used to own one, and what I can tell you is that it is an excellent value for what your getting.

They tend to come in a couple hundred dollars under what other ARs do, but do about 95% or more of what the more expensive rifles do.

How well you maintain it will probably have a lot more to do with the reliability you see than upgrading parts would. It should do absolutely fine if you keep it clean and well lubricated (they do not like to be run dry).

hey there i to was looking to purchased a ar15 about two years ago. i started at the gun shows prices where between 780 to 1200 at that time.because my income dictates what i can afford,i shopped around. i found a new olympic arms 16"barrel 5.56 round ar15 plinker, i bought it for 668.00 with rifle case. i have had no problems at all. no jams , use wolf ammo and winchester brands.the fit and finish is just as good as other brands. they are one of the few brands that make all the parts for there rifles.
how many rounds do you have through it, how hard have you ran it, and how many courses has it made it through without issues?

I've heard many mixed reviews of the Olympic Arms AR's. Like any other piece of equipment you're going to "bet your life on", you have to field test it first. Buddy just got rid of his Kimber 1911 because it consistently failed to feed. Another Buddy's Hi-Point 9mm is yet to fail him for almost 4 years of regular range time. If you get it, shoot it first!!! If it's consistent and reliable on the range, it'll be consistent and reliable at 3 A.M.;)

Just my 2 cents. If you're going to spend that kind of money, I'd also look at some other companies like Stag, Rock River and Smith and Wesson. I've seen all of them with models in that price range (that is of course if your dealer can keep them on the shelf).

i'll never buy one. Seen too many with problems. But alot of people own them and enjoy them and don't have problems. So it's touch and go.

I saw one just the other week that was recent production. Came with one factory mag, and that was the only mag that would fit in it. Colt mags, or any other aluminum mag, did not fit, and neither did Pmags.

When the guy called Oly Arms to see about about what to do they told him to take a file to the mag well and just file it out....real great customer service.

I don't read horror stories about Bushmast, or Colt, or Stag, or S&W, or Rock River. But I do read horror stories about Olympic Arms.

If your price range is $1200, you can still get one of any of the above mentioned ARs very easily. Just don't go to a shop that's price gouging.

If you are buying an AR for the sake of owning one, Olympic is fine.

If you are really, truly going to be using it to defend your life or the lives of others, then you're probably going to be in a position to be issued something or where you can get a discount on the "upper end" brands.

Whatever you get, I'd get it now. If you DO shell out the money for the more expensive ones, you probably won't regret it. Worst case is that you'll be able to resell it and get most of your money back and then go buy an Oly and STILL have funds left over.

WOW - oly no good??? I have nine DEAD deer with their 25 wssm upper. Rain, snow, 76F and they all fell down. My SHTF dog (pretty chessie girl) and I are enjoying some right now. BTW - never mind.

It is just a bottom of the barrel AR. There is still nothing wrong with it though.

:)

Javelin, very interesting...

We (the dog and I) will think about your opinion while digesting and will respond after we CRAP.

I will agree there are better uppers on paper.

The flesh will no be impressed.

perhaps i should just put a longbow beside my bed instead, since i can kill deer DEAD with arrows

Wzickey has done well by be. My dog will always hunt (I can only hope). I sleep confidently every night.

As you should. An Oly still beats the hell out of a stick.

;)

(I hope you know I am just pokin at ya)

Well, I don't have a lifetime of experience with AR-15 clones. However, my Oly K16 is an excellent rifle.. I'm a retired machinist and I can attest to the quality of the machine work. Uppers and lowers are all forged. Not cast as once was the common practice. Fit and finish are excellent. No burrs, no extraneous machine marks.

So I suggest that many of the comments above are based on rumor and/or elitism.

Javelin, they are machined. Not all the features on a component need to be machined and can be left as forged. Take for example the half-round raised ridges around the mag release button. No machining necessary for that ridge, it is formed during the forging process, but the hole for the mag button has been machined.

Take a moment to look at their site:

www.olyarms.com

they have an area that discusses the differences between previously cast components and forged current parts.

The idea of a 16" AR in 10mm intrigues, if spare 30 round mags actually end up for sale, I'd order one.

Cut that barrel back about 9" and I would agree wholeheartedly.

:)

i have a oly, and it will eat anything (ammo wise) and always goes bang when i pull the trigger, somwthing i can't say about my bushmaster. would buy another without a second thought.

i'll post this again for the 10th time or so lol between dad and i we have a few AR'S colt, dpms, double star,olympic,del-ton
the oylmpic and colt are the most accurate but all of the above shoot great nouthing badto say about any of them

I had two of the older ones and thought they were junk but the last couple of newer ones i handled seemed like much better guns.

My first AR about 4 years ago was an Oly. Shot pretty well when I was plinking with it and shooting slow. It broke less than 300 rounds into my first training course where it was being fired hard. Got it fixed, but it seemed like every time I got it hot it would start having problems extracting or would break something else. I got rid of it and got something else.

I would venture to say that MOST people who own and are happy with Olympic are not using them hard at all. For something that you may use to defend your life, it is just not worth it.

I am by nature a VERY CHEAP person. I am tight with my money, I love getting a good deal, and I despise paying more for anything just because of it's brand. I buy my clothes off the internet at the cheapest prices I can find. I shop relentlessly for the best price I can possibly get on any purchase over $100. In short, I like a good deal.

I went through an olympic, a Model 1 sales, a hesse (and I am STILL ALIVE!), 3 Bushmasters, and a couple of mixed rifles before I finally quit trying to save money and realized that with AR's there IS a difference in quality and reliability between certain brands.

Now I think that with a Colt you definitely pay a little extra for the name on the side, but you also get a better rifle that I would be more likely to stake my life on. If that were the only option, I would do it. Fortunately, there are a few other manufacturers that produce top shelf quality without the extra markup for the Colt brand. LMT problably leads this group. I have replaced all my AR's with LMT/Sabres and by shopping carefully I have managed to replace what I had with better quality, using the money I sold my other stuff for.

Read the sticky in the archives here about "33 Ways to Cut Corners On Manufacturing an AR-15".

If I need to hit small targets slowly I'll reach for the AR, if I need to lay down a volume of fire, I'll go for the AK every time.

I've heard of people melting the AR gas tube after a couple of C-mag dumps. I've seen the YouTube video of the guy shooting his AK so hard the handguard caught fire!
