How do you say "7.62 X 39"?

".30 short and weak"? 7.62x51 is not an intermediate round. Don't mix up calibers. Not many people willing to stand in front of an AK to show how "short and weak" the round is. "Short and weak" enough to go through almost 1/4" of steel plate at 80 feet.

30Short&Weak was tongue and cheek and was to imply that those "intermediate" 7.62x39mm rounds are for sissies, hence the reason I differentiate from 7.62Nato...... To think, I was simply commenting on what people typically assume if I mention I'm taking a 7.62 out shooting, they jump right to 7.62x39mm rather than 7.62x51mm.

Gosh, I go out of my way to try and be funny and it flys right over someone's head. See, it was something akin to how the 40S&W is lovingly called the "Short&Weak" by those who like the 10MM Auto. I'm more a fan of the 7.62Nato and that's why I find it funny to refer to the 7.62x39mm as a "short&weak" in comparision to the 7.62x51mm and have used it in response to the assumptions by others that I meant 7.62x39mm.

I own an SKS and yep, it almost goes through that 1/4 inch mild steel plate while something like a 7.62Nato or 30-06 Springfield goes right on through... :) Then there's my 300WinMag which is almost making it through 1 1/4 inches of steel plate, guess it makes the 7.62 Nato "modest and conservative" if I refer to the the 7.62x39mm as "short&weak".

Anyhow, I am a handloader and recognize the obvious differences between the rounds. Sorry I got you all rialed up.

WE CALL IT

My buddies and I usually refer to it as "SKS Ammo" We will usually say something like

"Before I head to the range I need to stop at the gun store and pick up some SKS ammo. Do you need anything as long as I am there?"

Never had to do this before on this forum, suggest you return the favor seeming how I obviously offended you by making a tiny little joke about the 7.62x39mm.

sheesh

You'd think this was the Firearms for Half-Life forum or something, uglygun.

I think I am going to start calling it seven-six-two Com., for the Communist regime it was invented under. Those who know their history should know that the 7.62x54R was a pre-Communist round, so my appelation shouldn't confuse them, although I'm sure it still will.

Uglygun, forget the subtle humor humor here. I tried it three weeks ago in my post "Will a .30-06 stop a tornado?" http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?threadid=29541, which was my subtle jab at the magnum mania that seems to grip today's firearms scene, and it went over like a lead balloon. Of course, it didn't help that I threw in that reference to strawberries at the end, which is just about all most people commented on.:( Maybe it wasn't all that funny (a lot of my rather dry sense of humor isn't caught or understood), but at least I tried a little levity, and I appreciate your attempt also, as I do all decent attempts to bring a little smile into the oh-so-serious subject of guns.
