I am looking for ideas on storing guns when in transit...say when you are on the road and not able to take your CCW inside with you...how do you secure the gun in your car? How about when in your RV and you need to leave your gun behind..how do you secure it?

I have seen a system by V-Line (http://www.vlineind.com/html/desk_mate.html) that allows you to move the gun safe from place-to-place by using multiple mounting brackets.

I am especially interested in creative and economical ideas that don't require buying multiple safes, etc.

Thanks much.

Couldn't you just get a pair of handcuffs & cuff the gun to the car?Out of plain sight,or in the trunk,of course.
I'm thinking either to a seat base,A trunk lid hinge asm,or to a pedal mount under the dash. The pedals have the benefit of being hardened.
Not very handy I'll admit-but should be secure.

i work in the same state i live and am licensed. i do not, i mean do not spend my money in states that dont honor my rights.

therefor, i dont have to worry about securing my gun so my family and i can go around unarmed.

with the 3 lic/permits i have.... and the reciprocity they bring, there isnt too many places i cant go armed. unless youre forced to travel to unfreindly states by your job....i just can see waisting time AND MONEY, in those states.

good luck with your quest, and try to stay safe while unarmed.

i carry mine every where i go... i just stick it in the glove compartment... and/or under the seat compartment when i use the van (but i make sure that i lock it)... nothing too fancy...

peace,

Go buy one of those Cannon cipher-lock pistol safe (about 50 bucks at sporting goods store), or a gun vault. Also pick up a bicycle cable lock. Drill 2 holes in the box. pass the cable lock around the mounting bracket for your passenger seat, then in through the holes in the box, and lock the cable inside the box. Saves you from having to drill holes in your car. Is it impossible to remove, no, but it will take tools and make alot of noise, and be a pretty good deterrent.

Remember, you don't have to be the toughest nut to crack, but you do have to be tougher than the car right down the way.

Lazy me - but typically I just use a trigger lock (Master Lock is the brand I have), just a simple pad lock between the back of the trigger & frame - or lock it up in the trunk.

Otherwise it goes with me. If need be, it's unloaded with a magizine or speed loader near by.

Does anyone here actually have any experience with anu of these lock boxes that use the Simplex mechanism?

A local dealer stopped carrying the R&D Handgun Box because they had so many returned with the twist knob broken off.

Haven't had a problem with mine yet, but I can see how it could happen! I hadn't accessed mine for a while, and I was SURE I knew the combination, and I was getting frustrated when it wouldn't open and I can easily see someone thinking it was sticking and cranking that little knob off. When I did go into my file where I keep the code and found out I had reversed part of the sequence, it openned effortlessly. I guess the trick is to go easy on it.

simplex locks

I have a V-Line safe (drawer size) that I'm in and out of several times a day. For a couple of years now.

No problems.

No batteries.

No keys.

Do it in the dark

I think they're a good idea.

Just guessing at the dealer who had so many problems: a bad batch?.

I also have two V-lines that I use to secure pistols in the house. I've had one for about three or four years and they work great. I practice opening them regularly and never had any trouble wth either. I've never tried to "gorilla" them to see if I can break them though.

I have a bed with storage under it built in the back of my truck that is set up to lock with a padlock. The long guns and any "overflow" pistols go there when in unfriendly states. Always keep something, even if unloaded and cased, up front, and take something appropriate into the motel room at night(model 12 Winchester and pistol are nice travel companions). I don't worry too much about the gun up front when I'm not in the truck travelling because there is always a large wolfy looking Malamute dog in the truck. Most people that see the dog make a point of staying away from the truck.

I travel across several states that don't have ccw or don't do reciprocal ccw. I never got a ccw because of that. At home in Wyoming you can have your gun loaded and available in a vehicle(or carry openly). The crime rate is about non-existant. I feel a need when on the road, but with the reciprocal situation I couldn't carry legal with a ccw in those states anyway.

I'm considering getting one of the cheap sheet metal gun safes for the camp trailer to secure guns in.

A safe was an option on my H2. It is made by truckvault. It will hold several rifles shotguns handguns as well as binoculars and cameras. Here is a pic. They make safes for suv's suburbans pickups etc.

Thanks SRYnidan, I have been trying to find another drawer safe for years. I have the exact same thing mounted to the frame of my bed, but I believe it is by a different manufacture, although exactly the same. I removed the hindged flap that is flipped up in their picture, so my looks like a plain drawer when I open it. I greased the rails years ago and it is very silent to open in the middle of the night if needed.
