A lot of palaver here about "iconic" guns, brought to my mind an old saying:

"A man needs to have owned at one time or another a .38 revolver, a .45 automatic, a .30-30 and a .30-06 rifle."

I've never owned a .30-06. Closest thing was when the US Government loaned me an M1 rifle. (I know, not really a .30-06, but very close.)

Been through several .38 revolvers, only one .45 automatic, a Colt Gold Cup; still have a couple of .30-30s.

I've owned all of those in various flavors at one point or another in my life and plan on owning them all again before I go

I own only one .30-30; the others in multiples. BTW, the M1 rifle is chambered in .30-'06.

I never had a .30-30, but I've watched Longmire. :p
Had a '92 in .45LC, but I let it get away.

I know that, but it always sort of rankled me that we were never issued any .30-06 ammunition, always issued Cal. .30 M1 or Cal. .30 M2.

First gun I bought was a Sporterized 03 with a Leupold scope, sold it because I never got the hang of running the bolt from the wrong side(lefty).

Never owned a .38spl but owned a Marlin 336 and still have a .45acp(S&W4566).

My idea of an icon gun would be a 12gauge SXS, maybe because I have a Browning BSS. :)

Owned them all and still do. S&W .38s, Colt .45 1911, Remington 1917 30-06, and 30-30 Marlin.

But folks, you have to listen to grandpa's lessons cause ain't many troubles that a man cain't fix with Seven Hundred Dollars And a Thirty Ought Six.

And apropos to Lindy Cooper Wisdom and God Bless Jeff.

No .30/30 . . . in fact no lever action of any type.

Also . . . NO black powder guns, nothing "legal" for cowboy action shooting.

But I handload for quite a few cartridges from .32 ACP to .375 H&H.

Not to mislead anyone.

But the M-1 Garand is about as 30-06 as it ever gets!!

Have had all, still have a .38 and a few 1911s. Moved on from lever guns, and left .30-06 for .308, as it suits my needs better. Funny - no shotty mentioned.

Never heard of that old saying but i wonder what the prize is for "stacking up"?

I've had a number of '06s over the years, but the answer to all is yes:

Currently
M64/3"
45auto in 1911s and S&W M25-2
Winchester M94 (1909) .30WCF
SA M1 National Match (1955)
Winchester M70 30-06
W.A. Sukalle custom M98 30-06

Guess I'm lucky on this one. :)

.
Among other things in the safe, there are:

Two .45ACP 1911-pattern pistols; one 5" Springfield, one 3" Kimber (the Col. approved).

No wheelguns yet, but have my eye on a lightweight, 5-shot .357 S&W, primarily to dispose of a lot of .38 Special my .357 levers won't cycle. My favorite lever carbine, however, is a .44 mag Browning '92.

One 1922 Winchester 1894 src in .30WCF, and one Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle in .308. I prefer short-action rifles for their contribution to lighter weight and shorter length overall.

I've got three .38 revolvers, all S&W: a Model 10, a Model 64, and a 642.

I've only got one .45 -- a Springfield 1911.

No .30-30.

One .30-06: a Garand from CMP.

This might not be very manly to admit, but I've got more .22 rimfire firearms than anything else. Way more. :neener:

Quilty of owning in multiples over the years.

Frankly if no other centerfire cartridges (other than those) existed , we would still be getting along just fine for the most part.

Owned quite a few .38 Special revolvers and .45 ACP semi-autos. Had a .30-30 years ago but sold it when I needed the money. Have used a number of .30-06 rifles but never had one of my own. The closest I come to that is currently is with my .30-40 Krag.
