How do you use a bore guide?

This is probably a really dumb question, but here goes anyway. I just bought a new cleaning rod and it came with a bore guide. I know the purpose of it is to protect the crown of the barrel, but I can only see how it's used if you insert the cleaning rod from the muzzle end of the barrel. I was always told to insert the rod from the breech end and I just can't see how the bore guide works if I do it that way. Please enlighten me. Thanks.

It is designed to be used when cleaning from the muzzle ... good for rifles like the M1, M1 Carbine, M14 ... rifles you cannot clean from the chamber with a cleaning rod.

Thanks for the info. It came with a pistol cleaning rod and I do like the idea of using it, so is there any problem running the rod in from the muzzle end on a pistol?

Not with a bore guide (...and really not with a barrel
the length of a pistol -- even without a bore guide)

No, no problem at all. They can come in handy with revolvers, too ... but can also help with a Quick-Clean on a semi-auto bore.
