i remember reading some posts where people said that if you need to break leather in public (lets say there's no immediate witnesses) that it is a good idea to be calling 911 at the same time.

well this is obviously not the case if they are rushing at you, but they said it is good to have the whole situation on a recording. do you all agree/disagree with this?

and also, if you do agree with calling 911 after you break leather, how do you stand while you make the call? A weaver stance would be akward, do you completley blade your body and take aim with your primary hand and dial with your other hand?

would you even need to blade your body since you aren't vs an armed opponent? luckily it is so easy to dial 911 you won't have to take your eyes off your target.

*edit* grammer and speeling misteaks.

I've wondered this too. Considering the OC spray and flashlight that are often recommended, it merits some discussion.

so easy to dial 911 you won't have to take your eyes off your target

Not for me. I can load, unload, and operate my handgun with my eyes closed, but I have always looked at the phone while dialing. Then again I have minutes left over from five months ago, so I guess I don't "practice" enough.

Notice how the 9 on cell phones is red while the other numbers are black? The 9 is factory set to speed dial 911. I don't even think that you can change it. Just hit 9 Send.

bayaou, new cell phone aren't totally like that (well mine isn't anyway) to do that you would have to turn off your key guard. 3 seconds of holding the back button.

but with the key guard on you can still hit 9-1-1 in that order. i accidently called it while it was in my pocket at work :(

I dunno. If you have the luxury of making a phone call are you really in imminent danger?

what if you are in imminent danger, like he is advancing towards you with a baseball bat. at 60 feet you have your gun out and aimed at him (closer or farther, either way) and he stops but doesn't run.

i mean there are countless situations where you can be in danger and still have time to call the police.

What if the prosecutor argues "Ladies and gentlement of the jury, the defendent was not in fear of his life. Why he had the presence of mind not only to shoot the deceased victim 5 times, but also to place a phone call to 911. Why did he do this? Because he had rehearsed it in advance. He knew he was going to shoot someone eventually, and thought the 911 recording would somehow absolve him from guilt. Instead we clearly see it was part of his plan all along."

Since I do not know what posts you are referring to, I will default to what I have seen and read.

Most of the posts I have seen have dealt with calling 911 after you have had to draw your weapon, but not discharge it. For example, two guys charge you, you draw, they set a world's record running away from you. What do you do next? Some suggest that said bad guys will immediately call the police themselves to report "a man with a gun" to get you in trouble. It might work since the general belief is that the first one to call has the credibility.

Now, the closer to home you are (and the more likely you are to be identified) the better calling the police yourself to report a thwarted assault sounds.

However, you also have to consider the local climate. In many areas of Massachusetts you could be in the right but still get picked up by the police as the assailant.

We had a case several years ago where a woman was being terrorized by a trucker on a lonely highway. She took out her legally registered firearm and had it in plain sight of this trucker. He backed off and called the cops on her. She was subsequently arrested, tried, and I believe convicted.

She recently died, suicide I think from the stress of having to go through this ordeal.

Speed dial sounds like a good idea and I will look into that.

But really I think you are giving me too much credit as far as phone skills. I only use mine a couple times a month. There is no key I could hit without looking. I see lots of people that might as well have the phone grafted to their ear, and I'm sure they could dial the number for the pizza hut in Tokyo while juggling with the other hand. But that's not me. If I need to draw, both hands are going to be on the gun.

Sorry guys...........................

If i pull my gun, my eyes are going be on the bad guys.

I will call 911 after i got a way or the bad guys are down!!!

hold thre gun with one hand

Hold the flaashlight with the other.

That was completely inappropriate.

EDIT: Nevermind, the inappropriate comment was fixed.

Omni04...

IIRC here was the post where we were talking about it

Thanks for the reference. My advice stands. If you are the victim of an attempted criminal assault which you stop, at the first safe moment call the police and report it.

Alert the police to the presence of some predators and cast yourself in the light of an honest citizen who is reporting this activity.

"as clearly stated in my testimony, the 'victim' was advancing towards me with a baseball bat. I had two options, one was to run, which i was not confident in my ability to escape. My other option was to draw my concealed firearm. After drawing he stopped advancing, but didn't flee. At which point i kept my firearm trained on him, while calling for police assistance. Like heard on the recording, as he continued to advance one more time i gave several verbal warnings until he came very close to striking distance, to which i was forced to use lethal resistance."

not to mention, as with all strats and tactics, there are so many variables...

"Additionally your honor, I did not attempt to hide my actions but rather called the police as soon as it was safe to do and even attempted to assist my assailant(s) rather than let him/them suffer on the ground."

Somone correct me if I am wrong, but don't most of the new phones have locater features. I remeber somthing about if you dial 911 and just leave the connection open, the dispatcher can tell where you are and summon help.

If this is true, dial 911, toss the phone into the grass ot somthing like that and forget about it, let the dispatcher record everything.

good point about just dropping it on the ground. Then you can yell out all the theatric "please stop, or i will be forced to fire!" :)

i know all modern phones have the GPS inside of it, but i wasn't sure on how quick that information could be processed. Im sure help would get therer quicker if you say "im in walmarts parking lot", but then again i have no idea how that information is processed.

i'd say pull, shoot, then call later. police won't get there any faster if you call them while shooting, and when they come they might be picking up your dead body and not the criminal's.

If you "break leather"
Call the police when you are safe, then call your attorney.

Tell the 911 operator your name, location, what basic details on what happened, description of assailants, if EMS is needed, etc. Do not pull theatrics or an acting job, unless you are a great liar, you're going to get caught.

I believe the cell phone is best left in your pocket or in it's carrier until after the shooting stops.

If you've gotten to the point that you want a firearm in your hand, you've got enough on your plate.
