How exactly does the Schwarzlose feeds?

Good idea! I'm gonna try that right now. I have an old Stevens Favorite take down model. When I unscrew the takedown screw the barrel slips easily in and out. I may get a ruptured case, but that's not a big deal with a 22. I'll fire it remotely with a towel draped over the action. back at ya in a few.

I said to think about it, as in visualize it, not actually do it...just for the record. With that said, I'm not sure .22 is going to have enough pressure to move what I'm guessing is a 20'' barrel.

ETA: It also might launch to the side or something.

Don't worry Grampajack, I'm pretty stupid sometimes but not THAT stupid. :D lol.. I fired it by remote from around the corner. I heard a louder than normal discharge which probably meant the case ruptured. ( It did) The barrel moved, but only about 6". Tonight, I'm going to pull a bullet, roll it between two steel plates until it is small enough to drop through the bore, and try the test again tomorrow. I'll be curious to see if I get the same result, or if the barrel won't go as far.

I would expect it to go a little less from the pressure loss, since the bullet won't seal things up. My gut wants to say it's going to be a minimal difference, but I suppose that all depends on how small you make it.

I am very surprised the barrel went 6''. I honestly didn't expect it to move more than an inch or so. To me, that's very impressive considering that barrel probably weighs ten times what the average .22lr bolt weighs.

Very interesting though, bravo! You should get it on video.

Wish I could, but I just got a new Computer with Windows 10. My old one had 8. Can't seem to figure out how to load a pic. :fire: My son in California has some pretty high powered friends, one of which used to design and build nuclear warheads at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Malcom is a double doctorate ( Thermodynamics and Plasma Physics ) He's kind of a physics nut. I told him to google "Schwartzlose 1908" and tell me how the thing works. Waiting for an answer.

Good to hear he's finally putting his skills to use on something important.:D

You got THAT right!!! Lol. I have never met Malcolm, but my son raves about him. Malcolm knows where to stand, so that Cuban Cigars fall out of the sky and hit him in the head. He's retired and still a busy man, so I might never get an answer, but my test tomorrow might yield some insight.

My apologies to the Moderator for this off topic banter.

I think this thread is too dry to hold the mods attention. The fine points of the operation of obscure firearms is something only a true gun nerd could love. When I get my manufacturers license I'm going to make a blow forward SMG. Why? Because near as I can tell no one has ever done it before! And if it doesn't blow up then I'll try a rifle caliber.

Well, the barrel barely moved with the undersized bullet. Just enough to blow the case head. About a quarter of an inch. I gotta believe bullet friction has something to do with it, Maybe Malcolm will weigh in. When it comes to physics I am way out of my league.

Good luck on getting your licence, grampajack, but if you are going to dabble in class III manufacturing, I hope you know what your getting into. We only saw the ATF at the shop once or twice a year, and then Les got his special tax stamp, which allowed him to be a class III manufacturer. We never did make any, at least when I was there, but we sure saw the ATF more frequently!

I imagine it's mostly because the bullet didn't seal in the pressure. Do you have a chronograph?

Sadly, no, I have been relying on a friend's when he came out to shoot. I really need to get one.
Probably the definitive test is going to be rigging up a blank adapter and firing a .22 blank. Is the barrel threaded by any chance?

Don't have any blanks, but I do have CB caps and some of that low velocity ( 740 FPS ) 40 gr. stuff. I'll try them in a few hours. The barrel is a simple slip fit into the receiver, with a large set screw which holds it in place. The gun is a Stevens Favorite, 1915 model. An early one, with no Savage markings. ( Savage bought out Stevens in 1916. ) Wish I could post a pic, but I am the most computer stupid person in the world and I just went from Windows 8 to a new puter with 10. Haven't figured it out yet.

I imagine with the undersized pill that it's not reaching a high enough pressure. That's why I say the blank adapter is probably going to be the only way to prove anything either way.
