This is something I asked in a thread in the general discussion part of the forum.

How far does you semi-auto throw it's cases? I've got about 500 rounds through my Saiga in x39 now and I've go tto say, this thing can chuck a case! I hit a guy in the neck about 20ish feet away my last trip to the range a few weeks ago. I have a hard with teh nets at the range stopping the cases because they are far to low to be useful in stoping them without screwing up my shooting position.

Is this a crazy distance? Normal? I think if that cases hadn't hit that guy it would have gone almost twice that far.

**NOTE** I do NOT try to do this on purpose. I've been trying to think of a shell net that I can build that will stop me from makig it rain on these people. Please, save the "you're being an ass" comments, that's not what I'm trying to do because hot brass/steel sucks when it gets in your shoe.

not unusual for those rifles to really throw the brass (or actually steel in most cases, pun intended)

Some like the FN2000 will drop them right down at your feet in a nice little pile. Others like the mini 14 as one fellow put it “…throws brass so far, I had to catch a bus in order to pick it up.”

When I first got my Saiga I loaded her up, walked back from my truck about twenty-five paces and shot at a target perpendicular to my path. Dang it, a hot case nailed the back of may trucks cab and nicked the paint. Sheash!

Ok cool. So now I don't feel do bad :D

It just caught me off gaurd to see how far these damn thigns can fly! I've also had some go straight up in the air and hit the ceiling about 16-18ft above me with some gusto as well. Time to start passing out umbrella's to the bistanders next time hahahahaha

10 yards is pretty normal with the AK family. The HK delayed blowback rifles also check brass into the next county, as can FALs, depending on how the gas is set up.

Most the euro designed rifle treat brass as something to be gotten rid of: You've done your job now off with you!

LOL, I think you might be right....as well as sending the brass into the next county, Cetme's and HK91's give the brass a good kicking and beating on the way out too :)

I've heard that, that FAL's dent and sometimes even bend (I guess crush would be a better term) the cases.

When I get out to Kentucky and my rifles follow me 2 two weeks later, I'll have to go out and measure just how far those little buggers really do go.

Yep, my AK and SKS both chuck brass a good 20-30 feet.

My K31 throws it about 10 feet straight up if I slap the bolt open with authority...put a nice divot in my head one day when I wasn't wearing a hat.

If you shoot an AK (esp in 223) up against a barricade or in a 'hallway' it's not uncommon to get brass flying back at you!

The standard dust cover that dents the brass slows them down a bit but the AKM style ribbed covers or a Valmet buffer will pitch your cases 10+ yards easily.

Never seen an AR throw brass like that. Maybe 10 feet for an AR?

With The Classic US battle rifle (Garand) and 60s Lake City ammo, only about 6-8 feet, at 12 or 1 o'clock. This is about five feet in front of the shooting bench.

With Russian x39 costs back to about .20/rd., it doesn't matter for an SKS etc.

I fired a couple mags from my CETME last week.

I'll let you know as soon as it lands.
Mine does the same thing, W.E.G.... I'm pretty sure they go into low earth orbit, since I can usually only find about two out of each mag fired.

Yeah my saigas throw the brass pretty good. One of them is probably my rifle that launches cases the farthest. My PS90 on the other hand just drops it out the bottom in a nice easy to find pile (unless I'm moving and shooting of course).

Have a Romanian WASR-10 and when I shoot in higher grass, finding the casings is just a waste of time. Have also hit friends standing off to the side.

Now my Garand leaves most of them within 5 feet, and occasionally a straggler.

Winchester model 07 has chucked .351s at least 10 feet, but nothing compared to the AK.

The range that I go to uses these sound dampening sponges/foam on the walls. My .308 saiga doesn't do any damage to them, but every time I take the mini14 out there, I always find there would be brass lodged within the foam, two lanes away. I'm talking really lodged in there.

My mini -14 can toss it into the next county. I really need to set up the Cryno to the side of me & see what the brass is doing. im thinking about 200 + fps

My AR-15 dumps them about 5 feet straight to the right of me. A couple weeks ago at a 3-gun match I was standing about 30 feet behind and to the right of a guy with a Mini-14 and I caught an empty case right on the left lens of my glasses. Good thing I was wearing eye protection or I might have lost an eye, that shell was really moving.

My 8mm Hakim and FN-49 both launched brass WAY out there! At the range I asked everyone to let me sit far right to keep them safe. After my 1st shot, anyone who WOULDN't swap with me was demanding to afterward!

Experience with HK G3 is that at close quarters the rifle is dangerous in 2 directions - straight forward and to the right. Sometimes it feels that at really close range the shells are more dangerous. The ejection is that violent. Typical experience at the range is that these throw the brass up to some 15 meters. So me and my M14 try to get the most leftside position. I still have some marks on the M14 from those UFOs.

A port buffer is a very good idea on a HK91/G3 and Cetme - I have a clip on polymer one that cost about $25. It nicely redirects the flight of the brass to about 1 O'Clock - 1:30ish - a good thing for others at the range.

My mini 14 Ranch Rifle throws brass about 30 feet. My Bushmaster about 5 or 6 feet. My Romanian AK about 25 feet. The Ranch Rifle really pisses me off as now I need to use a brass catcher so I don't lose my brass.
