How long did it take you to get your C&R license? It has been 3 weeks since I sent in my application for a C&R collectors license and haven't heard a peep out of the ATF. Is this normal or maybe the holidays had something to do with it. How long should I wait before sending an inquiry?

It took about three months for mine back in 2001. However, I have heard that they are issuing them more quickly now. Renewals only take a few weeks though.

15 days, but that was last year from NC. They reassigned agents during the last year. I've heard of one person getting theirs in 11 days! Still others have taken several months.

How long it will depends on where you are (some agents take longer than others), and how many apps. are ahead of you. How did you pay? If you used a check or credit/debit card make sure the payment has gone through, that's the first thing they do, they usually get the app. in about a week. If you don't hear anything in another week, give 'em a call.

It all depends on the state you're in. Just browse through the catalogs and give it 2-3 months. Calling won't make it go any quicker.

In my case: Paperwork submitted late August, license issued middle of December. Call it a bit over 90 days.

90+ days for Utah, but I had to do it via mail. They are way backed up from all the out of state applications.

My Ohio took 45 days, that was when they first started the program.

It took about a month when I first got it and about 2-3 weeks to change my address when I moved this fall.

I think you are talking about a concealed permit.

This thread is about Curio and Relic FFLs (C&R).

*I would have PM'd you, but you're not set to receive any.*

Yeah, I think that some here are confusing "C&R" with "CCW."

The C&R (Type 03 "Collector of Curio and Relics" Federal Firearms License) is a FEDERAL collector's license that permits the licensee to receive specified firearms in interstate commerce for the purpose of personal collecting of firearms. It is issued by the BATFE from the Atlanta Licensing Division. It is valid for a period of three years and has a cost of $30. They are "shall issue" to anyone who is not prohibited to posses a firearm.

Basically, it lets you be your own transfer agent ("gun dealer") for specified firearms and others meeting specific criteria ie. "All Original military bolt action and semiautomatic rifles mfd. between 1899 and 1946." You can view the entire list HERE. With the license, you can purchase qualifying firearms directly from importers/wholesalers across state lines without having to pay a gun dealer to complete a form 4473 and transfer the firearm--it cuts out the middleman and therefore lowers the price. However, it is not a dealer's license and does not permit the licensee to engage in the business of selling firearms.

It has nothing to do with a concealed carry permit, nor does issuance depend on what state you live in. In my experience, as well as others, it takes about three months for the BATFE to complete the background check and issue the license.

Do discounts apply to ONLY those listed items, or do shops give you a break on everything?

Certain big retailers like Brownell's, Midway, Natchez, etc., give C&R holders discounts if they have a copy of your license on file. I have never heard of individual gun shops giving any discount for C&R holders, in fact many dealers do not even recognize the 03 license. The big advantage is in being able have C&R firearms shipped directly to you, without the hassle and expense of going through a local dealer.

Less than 30 days

I'm in Alabama.

Sent mine off the week after Thanksgiving and got it back the Saturday before Christmas! I was expecting it to take alot longer.

Some places take an Email of your C&R I've found.

“Under 18 U.S.C. § 923(d)(2), ATF has 60 days, from receipt of a firearms license application, to approve or deny it.”

Like most state and Federal government agencies there is a time limit for the application process. You may contact ATF after the 60 days to request the status of the application.

If you buy just two guns in three years the fee pays for itself, it’s a great deal.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll wait the 60 days as that is their window of response. FWIW,I'm in Alabama and just 150 miles from Atlanta. Thanks again to all who replied.
