I would like to know, compared to break barrel/pump up/CO2 airguns, how loud would a CB short out of a .22 pistol be with a 5" barrel?

Thanks in advance.

Varmit eradication?
I am willing it would make a ladyfinger firecracker type of "pop"

I shot one through a 22 rifle and it was almost silent.

Out of my 6-7/8 Ruger MkII, I don't find it the least bit uncomfortable. It is the only type of ammo I will fire without hearing protection. YMMV.

Well dang. The airgun didn't work (scared them something fierce though) and the firing pin on the .22 is broken.

I guess I need to save up and get a cheapie .22 single shot.

And that'll kill rats? I guess it's worth a shot, I just found my (now illegal in MA) slingshot.

Out of a 24" rifle barrel slightly less than a pellet gun, out of a 4" revolver like a loud cap gun. Nick

As an FYI, the CB Long Rifle and CB Shorts have the same performace (velocity and sound level). My Dad has tried them side by side so now he gets the 22 LR version since it functions better in his guns.

If you search around you can still find "bb-caps" which are one step down from the "cb's". I use the "bb" on mice occasionally, but cb's are better for rats and squirrels.

I prefer Super Colibris. They push a 20 grain bullet around 550 FPS IIRC, are pretty accurate, and very quiet. In fact, I can hear the firing pin strike the rim of the cartridge.

They are pretty loud from a handgun (6 1/2 inch revolver) but still quiet enough for backyard plinking or pest control.

FWIW, longer cased cartridges are more accurate than shorter ones becuase they push the bullet directly into the rifling. With the shorter case, the bullet has to jump a distance before entering the rifling, which can effect the accuracy. The Super Colibris are in a LR case.

in a box of closely packed acoustic tiles i got the following numbers on penetration:rws45 flat pellets1 5/16", colibri out of 20" bbl.1/2" super colibri 5/8". these numbers surprised me. and the air rifle made more noise i think.by comparison, that fastest .22 aguilla makes dug in 3".this sounds like a good reason to shop for ,maybe an rws 54. this "test" was done at about 21 feet.i shoot the colibris out of an 18-3 and it is a lot louder than the rifle.the rws is .177

They make CB LRs? I saw CB longs, but not long rifles.
The CB Longs my Dad got appeared to be LR and were marked 22 LR on the side of the package, but that's from memory. We've also tried the Aguilia SSS 60 gr rounds. To my suprise they're quite a bit louder than the CBs.

The 60gr Aguila SSS rounds are Subsonic which is NOT silent.

I haven't chrono'ed them but so far I haven't had a CCI CB cap bounce back off of a 16oz plastic soda bottle and hit me in the shin bone from 20 feet. So based on that, I'd go with the CB rounds over the Colibris for pest control.

CB shorts from a rifle sound about like an adult air rifle (Beeman, etc). A buddy of mine has kept over 100 squirrels out of his pecan trees in his in-town backyard, and the neighbors are none the wiser :).

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

sounds like (pun) you need to get a selection and fire a few. the left overs will not go to waste as you will eventually find a use for them. keep them inside and dry and they will be viable for many years. they dont function for crap in an autoloader. single shot, bolt gun works fine, and, they are fun - many uses.

I decided to get a bunch of different options to try, fire at the range to test them out and borrow a .22 for a minute or two or get mine fixed.

They are Very quiet

About like dropping a magazine (reading type) on the floor.

I have a business in town and the stray cats are over running us. I have sent 6 to "a better place". All one shot kills. Longest range was about 30 feet. I shot a couple in my cellar last week and the sound was quite muted even down there.

In my 10/22 CB's make less noise than loading the chamber.

They make a thunk sound that is not normally attributed to a gunshot.

Greybeard- I havent shot too many of the lower powered Colibris from my guns (Marlin 60 and Heritage Rough Rider) but I never had any problems with them.

The Super Colibris are even better. They easily leave the barrel with enough energy to put a LARGE dent in the seat of a steel chair.

The problems were originally with Colibri and extremely long barrels guns (24 and 26 inch), although I still havent heard of many problems, both from people I know personally and people on the forums, including rimfirecentral.com.

Greybeard, I have a 22" barreled Marlin bolt action. I get 1 or 2 per 50 round box of Colibri that won't clear the barrel. They get to within 4" of the muzzle. The next shot will always launch them both to within an inch on the target though. Not to worry, there just isn't enough power to bulge a barrel. However this is why I won't mix plain Colibri ammo with anything else.

Poor performance in rifles is exactly why Aguila ceased production of the original Colibri ammo and replaced it with the Super Colibri.

The Aguila website STILL posts this warning for Super Colibri.
WARNING: These primer only loaded rounds must be fired only in handguns. When fired in long barreled firearms such as rifles, bullets may remain lodged inside the longer barrel. A subsequent firing of a regular .22 rimfire cartridge may result in injury or death to the user or other.

Personally I have never had a Super Colibri fail to exit my rifle's muzzle and I am almost through my third brick.

A .22 CB will make less noise being fired from a rifle than it will bouncing off (without breaking) the glass of a mercury vapor light.

Don't ask how I know this. Just mark it up to one of the lessons learned in my childhood.
