As I prepare to procrastinate cleaning my guns again, just wondered how many of you have some dirty guns always in the queue. I have 3 rifles waiting, (not counting my .22, which only gets cleaned every 4-6 months). My pistols were cleaned in two sessions last week, after finally feeling guilty about some of them. I used to get on them right after shooting, but now a dirty gun here and there is a daily thing. OK, High Roaders, fess up......

The wife complains that I clean the guns more than I clean the house. She's right, haha. The only time they're dirty is at the range.

Last three I shot didn't get cleaned right away and still haven't been. One got reloaded and re-holstered as soon as I got back to the car (can't carry loaded at the range), one got reloaded once I got home and put back in its HD spot, and the third only fired 18 rounds. After the next range trip they'll get cleaned. If they need it. Or not.

Everything else is clean, but I rarely clean right after shooting unless a gun gets dropped in the mud, filled with sand, rained on, etc. I'd also clean right away any gun that had function issues.

But I usually wait until several need it then do them all in the same session.

I think I may have one clean gun, the rest need cleaning and have for months. When I was younger, every time I shot, I would come home and detail the entire gun, tearing it all down, cleaning and oiling every part, etc.

I guess I got to realize, over time, that my house is pretty dry all year round (low humidity) so my guns aren't rusting that I am aware of. They still all fire when needed. Any more, I have more to do on my house than time to clean guns!

None, I keep all my guns clean.

I keep mine clean as well. Guns are tools. Take care of your tools, and they will take care of you. I'm not made of money. I have to take care of what I own if I want it to last.

One. My old SxS shotgun. I run an oil patch over the exterior every time I get back from shooting it, as well as get the visible gunk out of the action area. I can't tell you the last time I cleaned the barrels. Wait, I've never cleaned the barrels. So whenever the previous owner last cleaned the barrels... yeah.

At most they sit for one day, except for the SKS, which might not get cleaned for four of five days, because of the chrome-lined bore.

Having seen so many dim, dark bores at gun shows (a very sad waste of former battle rifles), I wonder how much of that was caused by lack of quick cleaning after using corrosive primers, or whether accumulated powder and residue attracted moisture.

Somebody describe a friend's brand-new hunting rifle, which shot limited rounds per year but was never cleaned. The owner ruined his bore.

Two.

But I just got back from the range and haven't had a chance to clean them yet.

I'll make sure they have a nice bath before I tuck them in.

define "clean"

some insist clean means round count since last cleaning = 0

What constitutes a cleaned gun? I can shoot a round of sporting clays, bring it home, boresnake it, wipe down the bluing, and put it away in 60 seconds. Is that a "clean" gun?

It also depends on the type of gun. I clean my guns according to each of their individual needs. I clean a blued steel gun anytime it's been in rain/weather or sweaty palms, but not necessarily every time it's had a round fired, and my stainless&polymer guns...well, let's just say if they haven't malfunctioned, they'll probably only get cleaned if I'm in a gun cleaning mood.

To answer the original question, I've usually got two or three guns that have had rounds through them since their last full cleaning.

Two right now. A .45 and a SxS from a range trip earlier today. Other than that mine are clean. I won't store a dirty gun. It will lay on my workshop bench until I get to it. It might not cleaned the same day, but within a couple of weeks it will get cleaned.

I do wipe everything off right after a trip to the range. I can't state how much I abhor rust and pitting.

None. I have my beater pistol in the top of my closet, and my AR15 in a corner of the closet. The rest are in the safe. No guns sitting around the house, as I have a four year old.

Judging by most of the replies, all of them are dirty, and some are downright filthy.

Cleaning them every time I shoot them is like changing my oil every time I drive my car. I clean my guns between 2500 and 3000 rounds, and change my oil at five or six thousand miles. My guns are accurate and reliable, and my three vehicles have, collectively, 830k miles on them.

Probably all of 'em, more or less. I did punch the tube on the Mauser with Windex, dry patch, Hoppes, dry patch then oil last time I had it out, but guns, like the man said, are tools and I wash mine about as often as I wash my hammer.

My wife has a couple that she's never fired. All mine are dirty and stay that way.

None. All of them get cleaned up as soon as Im back from the range. A clean gun is a happy gun. :)

Mine have to be cleaned as soon as I get back from shooting. But that's what you have to do when you shoot Black Powder.
