Hi, today I got my CCW permit. I have a 1911, Glock 17 and Glock 26 for carry.
I will mostly carry the 1911 or the G26. How many mags for each gun would you carry as spare? I know the mags from the G17 fit the G26. Thanks

My personal preference is one reload for whatever gun I am carrying. With slim, single-stack 9mm or .45 mags, it would not be much more trouble to carry two, but I've never bothered, feeling that one should be sufficient. With fat magazines, two starts to get a little bulky.

Some time back (c. Sept. 2007) we did a poll on this.

i carry a minimum of one and normally 2.

for the 1911 i say that you should carry 2 spares, i would go with a 7rd in the gun and 2-10rd mags as spares.

for the 17 and the 26 you should be good with one, though i would personally carry two for the 26.

For CCW I carry one for each gun, but I usually carry two to three guns...
Call me paranoid, but I've been shot at and I guarantee you once the lead starts to fly there is no such thing as too much ammo or too many guns...

Minimum 1 for the XD double stack, usually 2 or more for the 1911, it has been 3 lately. 2 in the MOB and 1 behind leatherman.

Now if I am not going to work, and out on my own, I carry a few more, up to 5 for the 1911 or 5 for the XD. I know it's almost ridiculous but hey if you can why not?

i just carry what is in my gun, 12+1 rounds of 45 acp. i am not likely to ever get into much trouble, but if i do, i certainly hope 13 rounds will take care of it (actually, i HOPE to never BE in a gun fight!). i HOPE to work on the marines motto, 1 round, 1 kill. however, i do carry 50 rounds in my truck, which is never very far away.

If I can't get out of trouble, with whats in my gun, I'll be dead, or running like hell.

I normally carry one reload OR one NY re-load (BUG). I just don't go walking around with loaded down belts and bulging pockets.

If the attire permits, I carry one reload (one mag or speed loader) in addition to the BUG.

Glock 17 -- strong side, 17+1
Glock 26 -- appendix, use the short mag for 11+1

Carry two spare G17 mags. This gets you 63 rounds and all mags fit in the G26. Keep two spare 17 round mags in the car in your emergency bag.

With magazines, the "One is None, Two is One" rule really applies!

You can fairly easily drop, lose, or damage the one mag in your gun.
Then you only have a very nicely made single-shot pistol, with maybe one round in it.
If you're lucky!

I think any auto pistol should always have at least two available & tested mags with it.
Not for the extra ammo, but for the extra working mag.

I was thinking of carrying for the 1911 an 8 round mag +1 in the gun plus another 8 round mag in the car. Then for the G17 the 18+1 round mag in the gun plus another 18 round mag in the car and for the G26 the 10 round mag in the gun plus the same G17 extra mag in the car.

I have MIlt Sparks - D-4C OWB double mag.holder
and a IPS - IWB single mag holder - one or the other or
both, mostly the IPS. for a 1911 in an Axiom

Two for the pouches on the shoulder rig: extra ammo & balance of weight.
Other than that, no extra mags for hip carry. :)

I'm always surprised by the number of people who carry no reloads. I personally never go without at least one extra reload. With pistols, I carry three, four, or five spare magazines. With revolvers I carry two, three, or four speed loaders and at least one speed strip, sometimes two speed strips and an extra gun.

Why so many reloads?? If you don't hit the bad guy with the 7-8 rounds in the 1911 or the 17 on a glock ou are not going to hit him with the reloads. You better turn around and RUN.

Now, that is surprising....I'm bustin a gut.....:D

My goal is to hit him with the first round. Wolves travel in packs and what says they haven't decided to shoot it out with you? Ideally, you'll be involved in a shooting (and I hope no one here ever is), in which you shoot the attacker, he stops attacking, you run away, call the police and continue on with your life. But what happens if you actually get into a gunfight, what if there are multiple assailants?

What happens if that priceless, unjamable, fantastic plastic jams? What if you get a heaven forbid double feed and have to rip the magazine out of it, what's faster, getting a new magazine or trying to reassemble your magazine?

Anyone here ever have the baseplate of a 1911 magazine rip off? I have...guess what, it's a fancy single shot pistol, then, because all your extra 7 or 8 flawless rounds are lying on the ground, along with your mag spring and follower. It's cool though, because you can knock out three opponents with one round right?

I'm not saying you should carry five magazines, if you don't that's fine. I do, because I've shot enough to know failures happen and they happen when you don't want them to. I've dropped speed loaders while reloading and magazines too, it is still faster to grab a new one then try and retrieve the grounded one.

Once again, just my opinion and what I do. I would advocate you carry at least ONE spare, and hopefully TWO. Three, four, or five is purely a personal comfort thing.

micky692002,

As said above, I carry at least a spare.

I also keep a couple spare mags for all my handguns in each of my vehicles. As I'm never sure which vehicle or which firearm I will have with me.

I used to keep them in the glove box or console. Now I keep them in a Camelbak with my IFAK and other odds and ends. I do also have a box (20rds) of each caliber as well.

What if you get a ....

can really conjure up many scenarios...I wasn't laughing at you, but your response about "all that ammo" had a comical ring to it due to a slight exaggeration...I was thinking about what garb you were wearing, perhaps a Gunga Din outfit, or how you would react when a peddler asks you, "Brother, can you spare a dime?", and you're reaching around in what's left in your pockets...:)
Your point about carrying an extra mag is well taken...Don't take anything I say seriously, I still thought it was kind of funny and your opinion is as good, or perhaps better than mine...:)

One. Which I've intelligently left in my bag at home today. :banghead: Still not used to carrying. Well, at least the 13 rounds of .40 in my UspC should be enough. :)
