How many extra mags do you carry?

The BG grabbed his handgun and ran down the hall towards his daughter's room. Fortunately, he wasn't seriously injured and grabbed the mini, eventually ending the fight.
This appears to be more of a reason to carry TWO GUNS, than it is an argument supporting spare rounds.
What if your friend had 5 spare mags for his handgun, yet did not have that Mini-14 handy?
How much good would reloads have done him at that time?

Now we're getting off into a whole new world jackstinson. This thread was about CARRYING extra magazines. I think home defense is a totally different scenario. You are in an environment that you are totally familiar with. You have options such as a mini-14, saiga, AR, Remington 870 shotgun, etc.... You have the option of leaving out a different entrance/exit. You can lock yourself in another room. Each scenario is totally different than another. If anyone says: "Well, for home defense, you should ........". Well, that person doesn't know much. Home defense is totally unique under each scenario. What's right for someone else might not be right for you. Just like: "Where's my fire escape route"? That's different for different people. I have a 3000 sq ft house. 6 bedrooms. attached 2 car garage. How I "Defend" that house, without allowing bad guys from finding/using/keeping weapons is unique for me. I've heard some people talk about how they have their gun, and have strategically placed additional magazines throughout the house in case they need them. I personally think that's ultra obsessive, but it might be right for them. There are too many variables in a house. How many live there? Where are all the bed rooms? Where are all the possible risk areas? Can I get to a family member if the bad guy is between us? Is there a place in my house that I and my family can be safe? The list is almost endless.

But for carrying, you're talking about personal defense. Most times, just having one other person with you is enough to not be threatened. So the vast majority is you defending yourself. As such, there are certain things that are universal for all people. When it comes to extra magazines, it all comes down to how much confidence a person has in themselves. The vast majority of self defense scenarios would not require a single shot being fired. The vast majority of those remaining scenarios will terminate the threat with the very first shot. These are facts. However, there are those who don't have a lot of confidence in themselves; they believe that it's the weapon that will protect them instead of the gray matter between their ears, so they take the position of: "Well, that one time in a million where you might need more than the 6 in a revolver or 7 in a magazine, etc....". Unfortunately, that argument doesn't really work, because it implies "Y" is needed because "X" isn't enough. But they don't have a logical reason, therefor the same argument says "Y" then isn't enough, and you need "Z". I carry a gun as a "TOOL". It can be used at distance further than arm's length where "OTHER" tools would be more appropriate or satisfactory.

No one is saying that a person can't or shouldn't be allowed to carry 2,3,4, or 5 additional magazines on them when they leave the house. This is American, you can definitely do that. But the same logic that they "Argue" against, is the same logic they are using when they don't have that "1 MORE" magazine. If 1 magazine isn't enough, for whatever their reasons are, then 5 magazines isn't enough. 10 aren't enough. 20 aren't enough. Those who say that whatever is in the gun is enough; possibly a second magazine for semi-autos in case of physical malfunction; has real life police data to back them up. Data shows what the "normal" amount of shots fired in a self defense scenario. Unfortunately, those who talk about the NEED for 2-3 extra magazines; needing a 15-18 round pistol; needing a backup gun on top of all that; and similar arguments, have absolutely no data, proof, evidence, etc... to back them up. Their ONLY defense is 1) Better safe than sorry or 2) It's my right. Neither addresses the issue, and they don't want to address the issue. But they also don't want to be told that they are paranoid, obsessive, and not trained properly enough.

I was good with my other carry guns... but this week I got a S&W 659 and it has a 15 round capacity. Now I feel even more comfortable then I did.

This is for my circumstance though. Where I live it is unlikely that I will end up in a shoot out at all, and even more unlikely I will use all 15 rounds.

If I lived in a city, or an area with gang activity I may feel differently about it but I am willing to take the risk.

And, I acknowledge it is a risk. I could get into the situation where I run out of ammo, have a mag failure, etc... but it is a calculated risk for my area of travel.
