I know that around

700 45ACP fits in a 30 cal ammo can
5-600 223 fits in a 30 cal can
280 30-06 fits (on enbloc clips)

Who has numbers on 50 cal containers or any other size. I ask because I just loaded up 800 or so 9mm and dumped them in a 50 cal can and it is only 25-30 % full. If that. Will be super heavy when full I expect.

.
On a side note, I'm thinking about switching to all 30 cal cans for weight reasons.

400 m2 ball ammo in a 50cal can. I purchased 4 cans and when i reload I put them back into the boxes.

these numbers are approximate, but will get you pretty close:
  • 1200 rds of 5.56 will fit in to a 50 cal ammo can.
  • 600rds of 5.56 will fit in to a 30cal ammo can.
  • 1750rds of .40SW will fit in to a 50cal ammo can.
  • 1000rds of .40SW will fit in to a 30cal ammo can.
  • 140rds of 12ga 2.75 will fit in to a 30cal ammo can.
  • 250rds of 12ga 2.75 will fit in to a 50cal ammo can.
  • 640rds of .308 will fit in to a 50cal ammo can.
  • 320rds of .308 will fit in to a 30cal ammo can.
  • 1300rds of .45ACP will fit in to a 50cal ammo can.
  • 770rds of .45ACP will fit in to a 30cal ammo can.
  • 2200rds of 9mm will fit in to a 50cal ammo can.
  • 1200rds of 9mm will fit in to a 30cal ammo can.
  • 300rds of 7.62x54r will fit in to a 30cal ammo can.

Jeff H asked: "How many fit"

I guess you are talking just dumping the rounds into the can loose. I'm afraid I can't help you on this because all of my ammunition is stored in plastic containers with compartments for each round and then the plastic containers are put into the metal ammunition cans. For the most part, the plastic boxes don't fit efficiently in 30 cal. ammunition cans, so I have used 50 cal cans.

In the configuration described, I get about 450 rounds of 45 ACP and 300 rounds of .223 Remington in a 50 cal. can. I don't load 30-06, so I can't say anything about it.

50cal cans are far more versatile, particularly for boxed ammos, who says you have to pack them to the gills?

This is true but its hard to quit loading them if there is still some space visible. I still use 50 cal cans and probably always will. I bought 2 pallets of them back at the beginning of the first Gulf War for $1 each.

Its kind of strange. A lot of these had red dust and dirt in or on them. I'm guessing Fort Benning maybe?

I switched over to the 30 cal cans years ago due to the weight of the 50 cal cans. I use the 50 cal cans for storing boxed ammo, which limits the count to about 1/2 of loose count.
