I seem to remember a thread/post on how many of each common caliber fit in a 50 cal ammo can?

If anyone recalls, I think there was a "chart"??

I have a chance to buy some large lots of 45 acp , 9mm and some others but don't want to count or "cube" it out.Weighing would be another method but would need a bathroom scale or something.:)

Some is in 50 cal cans some in the smaller narrower cans ((forget what caliber that is)?

Kinda like, guess how many marbles in the jar.:)

Thanks

A years worth of buying a .22LR bulk pack every Friday and dumping it in a 50 CAL ammo can will fill it within 1/2 inch from the top. I did that with WIN and Federal 550 bulk packs for a few years. I have a few rounds of .22 JHP ammo in cans hanging around yet.:p No shortage when I wanted to shoot through the last presidential time and feel good that I was not part of what caused the Bannic.

Thank you very much for finding this!!!

Appreciate it.:thumbup::thumbup:

Interesting. Now I have to re-figger how many rounds I have stored. No real reason to know, sometimes a guy just wants to know...o_O

I have most all my ammo stored in the 30cal cans. The 50cal just get too heavy to be moving around. I do store boxed ammo in the 50 cal though.

I always drop a note into the can when I load them up. This way there is no guessing and helps me maintain a accurate inventory.

Anyone care to attach some estimated weights to these numbers? I know 1000 rounds of 124gr 9mm is almost to heavy for me to carry and certainly to heavy to carry quickly.

I can verify that 600 rounds of 5.56mm will fit in a 30 cal ammo can if they area neatly stacked side by side, layer upon layer.

Using the avg weight of my reloads
(.45ACP, 230gr bullet, 5.8gr powder, mixed H/S brass)
(9mm, 124gr bullet, 4.6gr powder, mixed H/S brass)

1300rds of .45ACP will fit in to a 50cal ammo can. ~ 61#
770rds of .45ACP will fit in to a 30cal ammo can. ~ 36#
2200rds of 9mm will fit in to a 50cal ammo can. ~ 60#
1200rds of 9mm will fit in to a 30cal ammo can. ~ 33#

plus the weight of the can.

Got too many 22LR.
Got a full 50 cal can plus a couple thousand that don't fit.

I'll never get caught short again!

Based on your ammo can weights, my lower ammo shelf (where I store the ammo cans two deep and two tall) must weigh close to half a ton!

Stay safe!

Based on these weights you can see the "logic" (oxymoron) of the Army's decision on 9mm vs 45acp

Twice the rounds for around the same weight, More bullets fired.

Yes, we all know that the 45 ACP in a 1911 is the biggest baddest greatest round ever in the whole wide world.
along with the 30-06.:)
