I usually have 1 sometimes 2 folders, one is a Tanto the other is a regular old pocket knife. I sharpen them with a stone, "only took 20 or so years to learn how". and lately I have been studying the Karambit type of fighting knifes. They are really deadly if used properly. How about you, Fixed blade, assisted openers, double edged, stiletto?
Close quarters a knife can be better than a gun, and even faster. Like in an elevator. My current knifes are for the most part assisted openers, other than my old collectors type like Buck. I have an oddball non intentional collection that kind of just happened over the years.

Love my Spyderco Paramilitary 2

I usually carry a knife for work. As a boat captain i rarely get to use it and when i do its usually to give to a deckhand that forgot his. My knives are good and they know that i dont like giving them out to dummies who lose/forget their own :p

I always carry a cheap lockblade that I can sharpen quickly and don't care about its looks. I use them for work to cut open things and don't carry them for self defense.

The reason I carry cheap ones is because if they get lost, borrowed, or have to be ditched going through a metal detector I'm not going to worry about it much.

Always. Been a Spyderco Rookie for many years. Like it so much I bought several back then so that I'd have another should I lose the one I carry.

Yup what he said, with the following caveat:

Its not IF but WHEN they get lost etc..

Yes... I carry my Spyderco anytime I wear pants or shorts with pockets. I've had it for about 14-15 years.

I always carry a knife. I use it probably at least 20 times a day. I used to carry Benchmade's and other nice knives, but I lose them constantly, so now I just buy the cheap Kershaws that Walmart carries. I'm actually pretty impressed with them for ~$20.

I also prefer assisted opening flippers, which Kershaw seems to make a lot of.

Kershaw Blur with S30V steel blade. You can cut rocks with that blade and only have to sharpen it once every 6 months. It's amazing how well it holds an edge. I changed the angle on the blade so that it would get sharper than it would with the original angle (it came with a slightly recurved blade). I have to use a diamond stone to get it that way. Now I use a belt sander with very fine belts. I can't get as good of an edge as I can with a Buck knife but it sure holds up way better. And I can get it very sharp too. I opened a can of beans with my Blur last week and I could barely tell any difference at all afterwards. BTW I don't have the serrated blade. If I wanted a saw I'd carry a saw. ;)

I love the assisted opening on this knife. It's only come open in my pocket one time in the years I've been carrying it and it's so big you'll know quick that it's open. But when I find myself needing a knife in a hurry and I'm holding onto something that needs to be cut there's nothing like being able to open the knife with one hand and do it quickly. I haven't carried a knife without assisted opening in probably 12 years.

I grew up with Uncle Henry and later Buck knives after UH was sold to an Asian company. Whatever it was that happened to UH they went from making fine knives to making junk. I still have some from the old days including some that have never been put into use. But then I've got knives laying everywhere you look at my house especially in my garage.

I actually carry two knives with me if you want to call the other one a knife. It's a Buck pen knife with several different tools and blades. It's no utility knife or even a Swiss army type knife but it has tweezers, scissors, a file and various other things that come in handy from time to time. It has a blade too but I can't remember ever using it.

I don't have a lot of use for a knife at work. I generally carry a Buck 285 Bantam. It meets my needs, it's made in America and at 20.00$ a pop if I lose it I'm not going to be all butt hurt

HK Ghost II. Bought it a year ago, used it in various construction, automotive jobs and taken it hunting. Also have dropped more than enough times with the blade open and not. Never had to tighten it or sharpen it. Great quality for a great tool. Carry it everyday.

Knives

Always have a knife with me...or two.

Wife asked me once how many I was carrying one time ; I went through my pockets (lots of pockets) and ended up with four :
Cheap liner-lock.
Ditto folder lock.
Leatherman blade.
Buck two-blade folder.

Barely enough. :p

Always...a Gerber locking assisted folder, that can be opened with one hand if necessary. I'm a carpenter, not a knife-fighter, it's a tool I use every day.
When I'm on a boat it's on a lanyard...I've lost too many overboard. The serrated section of blade is great for cutting line.

Yes, always carry a knife. One pocket folder for utility tasks and a combat folder for SD.

SD is a system, a gun is a part, just like a knife.
