I asked this question on a different forum and decided to ask it here...

So the other morning after dropping the wife off to teach school I had some free time on my hands before the auto parts store opened, and went to a fast food place for a sandwich.

There was only one other person in the building and while siting and eating looking over the room I as usual play the "Whats wrong with this picture" and the "What if / what are my options" game.

So how many of you play this game when out and about?

Is this one of those games on the back of the serving tray placemats sort of thing? Or are you referring to mental awareness exercises, such as noting that there are 6 cars in the parking lot, 4 employees in the cooking area of the fast food joint, and you are the only person eating inside the place?

If you're talking about the mental exercise, then I suspect that most of us do this to some extent, either consciously or sub-consciously.

i usually do this but not as a game. i (try) to interpret actions and looks to see if the are idle or active threats. i have never seen an active one. thankfully. i look at it as giving me a feeling of saftey(probably a false sence) as i am only 20(not old enough to ccw)

I call it wargaming, in that I think of what's going on, what could possibly go on, and how to react to that. Call it a game. Call it condition yellow. Call it anything you want. Just keep doing it, as it will you prepared for when "what if" happens.

I do it all the time. Makes me feel better too, knowing that at least I have a possible plan of action if something goes awry.

To that excercise I add witness/memory drills.

Watch a car drive by and then quickly answer:
  • What make?
  • What color?
  • Partial plate ID?

Watch a man walk by and then answer:
  • What color hair?
  • Did he have facial hair?
  • What color coat & pants?
  • Hat or no hat?
  • How old?

There are of course endless variations.

I like this quote

“…an imperfect plan implemented immediately and violently will always succeed better than a perfect plan.” -- Gen George S. Patton

Either way- you need a plan

I do this with my girlfriend. she will ask me about someone we see in the mall, or on the street. It helps both of us stay sharp. I have to say that her level of observantness(?) has gone through the roof.

all the time. it's almost paranoia from an outsider's perspective so i don't let anyone else know i'm doing it. i like to make the best of any situation and keep my options open.

I have started doing this with my wife........and I am going to start with my daughter. It is amazing, at first, how little they notice. But they really start paying attention because it becomes a competition.

Take into consideration that the average citizen tends to be mentally lazy
and could thusly be labeled as condition white on a habitual basis...
I label this also as clueless. Some may choose to mull about with electronic devices
in the ears and eyes off in the blue sky of unimportance.

To be condition yellow and situation-ally aware could have a big payoff for
the person who practices that. The best payoff could be salvation of
ones' own hide!
Back in school, you paid attention if you wanted to ace the test.

If you hadn't guessed by now; to answer the question,
yes I do play the game. :)

I used to do it to pass the time when waiting on/for something. I was young then.

By the time I was 14 I did it all the time out of habit. I must say I have avoided alot of bad situations by knowing whats going on around me.

I do this all the time, but the one area I need to work on is looking UP. I tend to focus on the area around me and the immediate vacinity, but I occasionally have to remind myself to look up to balconies and the like.

My wife, who is a hystrionic anti, thinks situational awareness and CCW are indications of acute paranoia! So I'm not always CCW when we are together, and I'm watching for the both of us. Only God will protect her when she is alone.

Reading this thread brought about certain 'security issues' in my mind,so here I will share...besides 'doing tacticals' such as what rifles and handguns to 'grab' (if possible) bug out bags, ammo packs etc,the wife and I have a 'set of code words' to communicate if separate or together,3 meeting places etc. These 'code words and phrases' depends on the various SHTF situations that 'could/may' be encountered.

Just sharing because after this thread yesterday,I felt it a good idea to 'upgrade' on the 'codes and tacticals' formats.
