How many rounds boxes like this can hold?

Probably a couple thousand 9mm if they're .50 cans. pretty dang heavy.. about disintegrate the handle wires heavy. get ten

A 30 cal can hold about 750 .45 ACP, or 850 .38 Spl, or 1100 9MM. I don't know about a .50 cal can. The only thing I have in one of those is .223. A .50 will hold 1K+ of .223.

.50 Cal cans full are quite heavy. Heck, a .30 Cal full of 230 .45 is heavy.

Thanks! I will pass on it then :)

Probably something smaller form ammoboxes.com will be better choice. I want to keep couple thousand rounds maybe and I don't want to package all of them into 50/100 rd boxes.

Get the ammo cans.

There is nothing better for ammo storage.

In the event of a house fire, the lid seal will melt, and the lid will spring open enough to vent gasses.
The steel can will contain all the flying primers and case frags.

That is what they were designed to do, among other things.

Yeah, that's why I like the .30 cal cans, so I don't get a hernia moving a can of ammo across the shop. Maybe I should just work out or something. :)

Well, you learn something new every day.

I use .30, .50, and SAW cans to store ammo in, but very few have loose rounds just dumped in. I typically use the white ammo boxes from Midway, and those are a little larger than factory ammo boxes, since they're kinda "generic" to fit several calibers. I've found that the SAW cans are the best for storing the max amount of boxed reloads.

A .50 can full of loose rounds of ANY caliber will be mighty heavy. I have four .30's that are full of four different brands of loose .22LR, and they're heavy. I also have a few .50's full of various kinds of loose combloc surplus 7.62x54R rounds, and those are By-God heavy.

The cans can handle the weight a lot better than me though, they're very sturdy and I do recommend getting all you can or need. Craigslist is usually a good place to search for some bargains.

I guess a photo would help. The four large cans top right are SAW cans, a .50 will fit inside one. The big 40mm grenade can at upper left is full of boxed .223's and it's a groaner to lift. These have all been relabeled and rearranged since this photo, don't have a new one.

Packaged .38 special will be 16 boxes of 50, so 800. I used 9mm boxes for my .38 special wadcutters.

I think loose .45acp 200 grain LSWC are 1200 or 1300. I lost count. 9mm will be my next 50 caliber box. ;)

I just got a hernia.
Seriously, you'll spring the handle wires on a .50 loaded with loose 9.
I'd get twenty

Are you trying to win a kewpie doll?

I was going so say that! But since you already did, lets all do the math and come up with the cubic inches of the box and the cubic inch of one 9mm cartridge then divide.

There will be extra credit for the winner:)

Cans measure 11" X 7" X 5.5"=X

Just to get ya started:D

Shipping is gonna kill ya.

well, if I remember my helementary school pre-geometry, it's 423.5 cu in outside dimension, so roughly 420 inside, just for convenience sake. Simply calculate the dimension of your loaded rounds and divide that into the 420.
Or dump a bunch in and count 'em

Nice pictures! I just stack my ammo cans up 4-6 on top of each other, not on shelves. Slightly OT, but I have only one SAW can, used inside an old microwave for a homemade Faraday cage. I have a couple of .50 with 700+ rounds of loose .223, and some more with .223 and .308 on stripper clips in bandoliers. They are heavy. Then I have bunches of .30 cans, bought in bulk from Widener's like Walkalong's. Those are mostly filled with ammo in boxes.

I managed to get 1,450 rounds of 230gr 45 in a fiddy can. sucker weighs a good 75 lbs and is a bear to move. boxed up in the smallest 45 trays you can get(tula and american eagle) 1000 rounds in a can.

I must have some room left in my .45acp fitty cal can because I only have 60#. The .38 special boxed fitty can only weighs 30#. :D

Great for ammo

I store ammo & some powder in ammo cans. I got mine from "Gold Nugget" surplus in KY.That was one election cycle back in the 1st years of "Hope & Change". I have them in size from 30 Caliber right up to 40 MM with most sizes in between.I thought at the time I had enough but I have to use kitty litter plastic buckets for the overflow of components & brass. Figure the number you think you need & double or triple that number and if my experience is an indicator you will still run short.Ammo cans are like guns, you can't have too many.I do not have my wifes permission to say any of this!:banghead:

I learned about .30-30 sights last night. Ammo can volumes (and fires) tonight. All on the reloading forum!

Good info that I can use!
