I'm wondering if anyone has tried one of these http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=XM84SCOPE&name=M1D%2f1903A4+M84+Telescope&groupid=6 scope mounts and scopes on a M1 Garand. How are these replicas?

I just came across it browsing the web, I don't have a M1 Garand yet but I know a guy that does and he had expressed interest in getting a scope for it before. It seems a little odd being offset from the bore like that and I understand the necessity to loading and functioning of the rifle but how would cheek mount work out on this?

One more thing, would this fit any of the M1 Garands or only the M1D?

If it's made to original specs, it has a 7/8" diameter tube and it will require a M1D scope mount.

My understanding is that the M1D scope mount only fits M1D's (or Garands that have been modified.)

If you look closely at the photo you will see a large steel "ring" forward of the receiver. This is part of the barrel, really. That's the part that is necessary for the M1D scope mount to work.

The cheek weld problem was solved with a lace-on leather pad, forcing the shooter's eye into alignment with the offset scope.

My recommendation is that, unless you are looking to create a replica of an M1D, something like this works much better -

I got one from the Sportsman's Guide. As dmazur says, you need to have an M1D barrel to use the military scope mount, but you could get 7/8" scope rings and use one of the commercial mounts instead. Sarco has new M1D barrels if you want to take that route.

The M84 repro scope is awesome. Very high quality, super clear image. It is a lot of money for just 2.2 power but it just looks "right" on the M1. My only quibble with the scope is that the finish is too easily scratched, and like an idiot I scratched it up trying to mount it even with strips of duct tape on the inside of the ring.

If you do buy it in conjunction with an M1D barrel, keep in mind that the reticule is a pain in the butt to level. Tightening the retaining screws will change the angle of the scope, so you actually have to cant it slightly prior to tightening the screws. This took a lot of trial and error for me.

I have a repo...

on my M1D that I got from the CMP. I also got the mount and flash hider from the CMP too. I could not afford an original M84 so I went with the repo. It is very nice and does what it is supposed to do. I cannot tell the difference except when it is side by side with an original M84. Another consideration is how will a 60 year old scope hold up.

BTW, the CMP still has M1Ds and M1Cs for sale.....less scope and mount though....chris3
