I understand that the M2A1 ammo can has a "lever-lock" system, but I have no idea how it works. Using regular Google search, Google image search, etc. yields nothing except homemade locking devices, many of which require drilling into the airtight/watertight can, which I am not willing to do.

What do you guys do to lock up your .50Cal M2A1 cans?

Nothing.

The snap-down ammo can latch seals the can, and takes some strong prying fingers to unlatch it.

In the event of a house fire, the rubber seal will melt and the latch spring will give enough to allow gas escape and prevent the can blowing up like a giant pipe bomb.

If you want to lock it up as a make-due safe?
Weld the padlock hasp to the outside of the can instead of drilling it.
Or drill it and put silicone seal on the inside when you stick the lock bolt through the can.

But either way, you lose some of the safety factor of the pop open latch in a fire if it can't.

Interesting, did not know this, thanks.

I was wanting to use them as transportation containers, and therefore, needing them to lock. However, now that I know about the fire-safe capability of the cans, I will use them in my safe as-is, and use another type of (lockable) container for transport.

Thanks again. :)
