I have a chance to buy a NIB ACOG Compact for basically about half price. Doing a search on THR shows more than a few threads about ACOGs, seemingly all positive.

I am wondering how many THR members actually use ACOGs on their personal rifles and how do you mount/use them? Are they better on flattops or A2 handles? I'd love to see some pics to see what my set-up should look like. I will probably put it on my Bushie Carbine.

I used one in the Marines. Military ACOGs = Junk. But i'm sure if you got one new in box and took care of it, it would work just fine.

Darkmind,

You're the first one I've ever heard call ACOGs junk! But you seem to be hinting at abused ones, could you give some more detail, out of curiosity?

Anyway, I have an ACOG, though right now all I've done is punch paper and plink with it. Haven't gotten into 3 gun or anything like that yet, though I want to. Most of my guns right now are just owned for fun anyway, and in that purpose, I can definately see why it's so well liked.

For a mount, I have an ARMS #19s right now, but apparently the LaRue mounts are getting good reviews as well. Don't have any complaints about mine though.

Ding Ding Ding, bob please tell the man what he won.

Well i'm not trying to say anything bad about the ACOG line BUT the ones we were issued were so abused (ie. they have seen combat overseas) that most people would just buy their own and leave their issued one in the armory. I never bought my own so i have never used a NIB ACOG. If i could ever come up with the money i mite get one to try out on my soon to be in my hands M4.

Bridger...

Good pic! That's what I was looking for, thanks. Just a few questions. Do you have the standard AR front sight? If so, what is the interaction between the ACOG and the front sight? Where can I find the ARMS #19? Who sells it?

My carbine is a flattop also so mine might end up looking like yours.

I have an ACOG reflex, but being the heretic I am, I've got it on an AK. It works great for quick target acquisition while keeping both eyes open. Granted, the AK doesn't have the inherent accuracy and range of the AR-family, but the ACOG does its' job rather well.

TA31A here, with a Trijicon TA51 flattop mount. Mine's a 4x32 with BAC & it's great. Would highly recommend getting one, though they are pricey.

Oh no, they are horrible. By the way, could you tell me how to get a hold of the person selling it?

Buy it now, it won't last long.

The LaRue mount is very compact, takes up little space.

Make sure your BUIS is a flat one, like the Troy or ARMS 40L.

6530, how do you like the BAC? Pls describe what it does if you don't mind. I have read the Trijicon literature on it and it sounds like a great idea if it works well.

I am wondering if I should put an ACOG on my M1A when I can't hack it with iron sights any more. At the going price I'd like to get it right the first time.

I have a TA31A as well. IMHO, the BAC equipped ACOG's are a perfect match for an AR. Although they are not quite as fast as an Aimpoint up close and not quite as precise as a high powered rifle scope at longer distances, ACOG's are cable of performing well in both situations. I haven't found another optic that comes close to this degree of flexibility.

The BAC doesn't work as well for me as for most people because I have a combination of astigmatism & prism (also called binocular dyplopia, I think, but it's where one eye aims higher than the other and sees a slightly different elevated image and the brain has to resolve the two images into one). I'm also left eye dominant but shoot right handed. Having said all that I can get the BAC to work if I concentrate, though.

As I understand it, BAC works like this: as the shooter looks through the scope with both eyes open, the shooting eye sees the red point of the sight. As the shooter moves the rifle, the image in the sight blurs due to the movement, but the non-shooting eye retains a focused image. As movement occurs, the brain automatically switches and relies on the focused image (the non-shooting eye), but when the movement stops, the brain then automatically switches back to the image in the sight, at which time the shooter can make fine aiming adjustments and fire.

As someone else already posted ACOGs as a rule are more precise than Aimpoints at long distances, but frankly they're both plenty accurate for me. In addition to all the challenges above I'm technically using the wrong scope, since I have a TA31A (designed for an A2 carry handle mount) on a flattop, but in talking about it with the Trijicon folks the difference in POI is less than 1 MOA - plenty of precision even at 800 yards.

I've got a TAO-1 that I bought back in 1988. The tritium is still glowing brightly.

I mounted it on the carry handle of my Colt AR15A2 HBAR, even had the second hole milled into the carry handle. Today it's in a TA51 flattop mount on top of a Swan sleeve on a flattop. It works great, has stood up to a lot of abuse.

I'm going to agree with Zak, it's the best 400 meter optic out there for a hard use rifle.

Fprice,

I have the standard front sight still on the rifle, which is a 20" bbl by the way. When looking through the ACOG at first you'll notice it as a slight blur, but I can't say I've noticed it anytime recently. It doesn't get in the way at all, and it is not distracting.

As for where to get the ARMS mount, if you want that over the LaRue I got mine from www.adcofirearms.com
