Long story short. I bought a gun from a friend of a friend, it's a 700 in 17 Remington. The action has been worked over, trigger is not factory, and the stock has been pinned. The gun looks to be in very good condition.

What would be a good asking price if I was trying to sell it? Just the rifle, no rail/rings or optics.

I had planned on having this gun get rebarreled into a 223, turn it into a bench gun. But after thinking about it and doing some research I think I'm going to pick up a new Sav 12FV in 223 and be done with it...It'll allow me to save more money for optics and a new stock.

Thanks.

Which variant?

If it's just a standard BDL, $400-$500 in VG to EX condition. The mods don't really do anything for value.

If you have any interest in varmint shooting, I say keep it. The .17 Rem is an awesome varmint round, and there's so little recoil, you can see the vapor trail (humidity providing) and impact through the scope. I have a 700 LVSF in this chambering that shoots .67 MOA average/5 shots, and I'm definitely not getting rid of it.

Just browsed a few used racks around town, wood stocked 700 BDL in 7mm Rem Mag was going for $500 in EX condition... you can buy a brand new SPS for the same price. (I'd take the older BDL personally.)

If you have documentation from a gunsmith outlining the work that was done to the action/stock or a specific make-model of the trigger assembly (Timney, Jewell, etc..) the mods may increase the value a bit... if it was home gunsmithed it may go the other way. If you trade/sell it private party you will get more than trading it/selling it to a gun shop (figure %40-60% of book value).

Thanks everyone for the answeres. Looks like about 500$ would be a good starting price. I have some interest in varmint hunting but in reality I probably won't use it. I have several ARs and a couple 22 hornets that see more use.

Sav250: if you can find an average price for a model 700 in 17 rem with the mods I've listed from google, I'd like to see it. I never sell guns and this is the first time in probably 15 years I've purchased a used firearm. So thank you very much for your informative and assistive post.

Your very Welcome.............. I`m sure you mean that in a nice way........................

I just googled your question and found a used one on GunsAmerica for $769.
Condition ,as you know, plays a very important part in pricing. Finding someone who wants it is something else.

My suggestion on using google still stands. While opinions are good, nothing beats seeing what Auction sites are selling them for. Put another way, what folks are willing to pay for them. A more active scale, giving you a $$ figure to work with. J s/n.
