Savage or Remington?

View attachment 785777 It depends on what level of precision (and natural fit) you want to pursue. You can buy, or build-up and MOA-capable rifle for less than $1,000 for the firearm and optic. Shaving-off 100ths, 1000ths of an inch starts to increase cost...a lot.

My SF nephew and I delight in shooting once-fired shotgun primers at 100 and 200 yards. I delight in shooting shotgun primers at 300 yards.

The factory stock in the Savages firearms will usually need to be upgraded due to how the comb is so low, especially if using a 20 MOA off-set rail. I personally hate to buy a firearm, and replace (enhance) half of it. That is why I build my own ARs versus buy and enhance.

My next Savage will be a M12 single-shot action that I build.

Ok, I also have a Howa 1500 mini in .223. If I were to try that for dipping my toes into a bit longer range, what weight bullet would be best for 1:8 twist?

You have a fast enough twist that it should stabilize 75 and 77 grain projectlies, and probably up to 80s. Howa is a nice firearm BTW!

M118LR, nice what are the particulars on that one?

Started as a Remington 5R MILSPEC (Unicorn purchased at Shooters Jax Fl.) Bedded the action & everything that is upgraded carries the Badger Ordnance Label. The 5-25 Steiner tops it off. Turner Sling and 1 1/4 Uncle Mike detachable swivels. I'd have to chase down the paperwork to recall the maker of the comb riser/ butt stock pouch. (Eagle something or other I think) Harris bi-pod.

I would not touch a Remington 700 right now with a 10 foot pole. Quality, accuracy, price, everything's bad. Honestly it would be very close to the bottom of the list of modern production rifles.

The last Remington 700 I looked at looked like it had been made in Turkey in a prison workshop. Never owned a Savage so no input here.

For a dedicated, target only rifle, with a limit of four (to six) hundred yards, a two twenty three makes an excellent rifle. Lower cost than either previously mentioned cartridges and less recoil. Seventy five grain bullets will work with the twist and get all the way there.
And the best or worst part, no extra rifle needed, nor scope or rifle bag, or bipod...

(Don't listen to me. I don't know what I'm saying, get the new Savage. One more can't hurt. Can it?)

No. I mean, yes. Howas are great rifles. The money is better spent on lead...

(But, it's a NEW rifle. And a SAVAGE...) (It will need a new scope... The new Freedoms are out...do it...)

@ontarget, As you will note from the linked thread, Cabela's and Savage run periodic rebates and sales on the 12FV. After fiddling with mine a bit I ordered a different stock and a single shot tray.

I bought my M12FV, 6.5 CM for $319 (after $100 rebate). A few weeks later, Cabela’s dropped the price to $319 and Savage still had the $100 rebate.

There are quite a few people here at THR who have managed to get these rifles in the $219 to $249 range. It seems to be an annual event with Cabela’s and Savage.

This coming fall, I’ll be watching for their super-sale and snag a .22-250 Rem to complement on 6.5 CM.

@ontarget, The sole purpose for my 12FV is shooting saltine crackers at 200yrds. It is .223 and wears an inexpensive Bushnell 8-32. Most of the time my shooting buddy and I use .22LRs for the 200yrd cracker game. I am hoping that the Boyds AT One adjustable stock works well with the 12FV.

If I could get one at those prices I'd be all over it.

Been eye balling those stocks. Let us know what you think of it.

Got some shooting done with the Savage 12 FV converted to single shot in the Boyds AT One stock. Worked fine for my purposes. I need more rounds through the barrel but once it hit 6 shots in a nickel at 175yrds I quit for the day. Was using bulk AE 55grain ammo, and the old Japan Tasco 8-32.
