What's the going spread for these things? Other than soft bolts, are they any other known issues with the Polytechs that I should remember? (I'm M14/M1A ignorant...)
They also have chrome-lined chambers, so adjusting headspace after installing a USGI bolt is NOT simply a matter of running a finish reamer in there. If it doesn't headspace with a hand-selected USGI bolt, you're looking at another barrel. The flash hiders were faux, (no slots), for BATF import purposes. The wood is known as either "Chu" or "Oingo-Boingo", depending on who you ask. I've seen pics of a couple online here that cleaned up really nicely, the rest just get replaced with walnut, birch, or USGI fiberglass from Fred's.
Regarding that forged chunk of ordnance steel in the Norinco/Polytech M14SA receiver, I'd grab one in a heartbeat, and kick myself for not having bought a couple at discount in the early 1990s.
Everybody seems to offer and sell them "like new in box" now.
I wonder why?
Maybe it is because the rifles are notorious for frame stretching withing 2000 rounds if they have not been properly heat treated?
If you find one now for $700 or less insist on head spacing the rifle, if the seller won't allow it pass on the sale.
The LNIBs at $800 and up are overpriced in my opinion unless the seller offers documentation that the rifle has been properly heat treated.
I would still insist on head spacing the rifle.
The documentation would be a work order or receipt for services rendered listing the work preformed and serial number of the rifle.
