I've got a big stack of 41s from my gun club that I'm going to strip apart and scrub up as best as I can. They REALLY need cleaning (aside from the one that I use, I don't know when they were cleaned last) and after some intensive cleaning, I don't think there will be any lube left on them, if there was any to start out with. How much, if any lube, do these guns need, and if they do need some, what kind should I go with?

I use Tetra Gun Grease on my Model 41, but then again I use Tetra Gun Grease on about every firearm I own.

A few judicious drops of any CLP are fine. As long as you feed them CCI SV, mine run dry, wet or drenched w/o problems.

Since you have several to clean and they may not regular maintenace after you are done, here is how I would do it.

Get a 5 gallon plastic bucket or similar container. Mix up some home made solvent. I use 1/2 gallon each: kerosene/mineral spirits/Auto Trans Fluid

Remove the grips and set them aside. Remove the barrel and slide.

Inspect the magazines. If they need cleaning and have the removeable base, tear them down for cleaning and reasemble dry. If they have the fixed base, use a long handled Q-tip and Hoppe's #9 to get inside. They will need it.

Take the barrel, slide, and frame and immerse them in the solvent. Scrub them all inside and out with an assortment of brass and nylon brushes. Pat them dry with paper towels and blow the frame and slide interiors dry with compressed air. Finish cleaning the bore as you normally would.

The residual film of ATF fluid in the frame and firing pin area of the slide are all the lube they need.

I use a light film of RIG grease on the slide rails, but any good gun oil will work.

Good Luck...

2 Votes for the CLP. The only other thing i have ever been completely satisfied with is "Slick 50" liquid lubricant (Red pump spray can). If you stumble across it... GRAB it! It's very hard to find.

For M41's:
- Remove and clean barrel using Shooters Choice Bore Cleaner.
- Be careful removing (and replacing) pistol grips as they can sometimes become brittle with age.
- Clean frame and magazine with Shooters Choice Bore Cleaner.
- Lube ALL shiny spots where metal rubs on metal with FP-10. (I lube my guns slightly on the wet side but not sloppy wet.)
- Assemble pistol.
- Wipe outside of pistol with FP-10, RustPrufe, or similar product to resist rust.

Good shooting and be safe.
