Trying to purchase a used Ruger GP100....I have found one that according to the owner has around 500 Speer Lawman .38 specials through it and about 250 Magtech .357's.

Just wondering how much wear this would likely put on the gun. My guess would be not much but just checking as this will be my first revolver as well as my first online purchase.

Sounds like the first three sessions at the range with mine!!!! Guessing a GP will withstand many many thousands of rounds, that one has allot left in it for sure. I probably have 2000+ rds through mine and it still shoots like new but the trigger is probably a little smoother and there is a ring around the cylinder now that wasn't there before, other then that I can't tell it from new.

its just gettin ready for a first tear down cleaning session!!!!!
i have one with over 6000 rnds & is smoother that wet owl soot!!!!

he did you a favor. decreased the price a little and smoothed out the DA trigger pull

Basically what I was thinking. You could pound on that gun with full bore .357 for YEARS and not have any issues. Hell you could use it for a hammer if need be and not likely have any issues.

Enjoy it.

I've had both the 4" and the 6" models. GP 100's are hard to beat. Check for any play in the cylinder. Other than that you're good to go.

Sounds like the guy did you a favor and smoothed out the trigger on a new gun.
+1

So instead of dry firing 1,000 times to smooth out the new trigger, you only have to do 250. Good deal... And you get it cheaper, too??? :)

FWIW- you would have to run it over with a bulldozer or something like that to hurt these things. They're very rugged.

That many rounds has not yet begun to put a dent in the weapon's lifespan. In a way, this many rounds is a good thing, as it shows the parts all left the factory properly hardened and heat-treated.

When I got serious about learning to shoot a handgun my first was a 4" GP100. One thousand rounds a month for six months, I had also taken up reloading with a Dillon a SDB. Fourteen years later and it is still my go-to gun, even though I developed a very bad case of 1911 disease which won't be cured anytime soon. Good buy.

Thanks...i'm super excited...this will be my first revolver, it should get here next week.

I also ordered a new Taurus Tracker .22 as a cheap means to practice my double action trigger pulls. Ordered the tracker two weeks ago but it looks like my GP100 will get here first as the gunshop is having trouble locating a tracker in .22

Definitely got bit by the revolver bug....already looking towards a future purchase of one of those new 4" Redhawks (trying to decide between .44mag or .45 colt).

The GP100 is a tank, one of the toughest revolvers ever made, period. That many rounds will result in zero wear.

But.

It IS possible for Ruger to ship a lemon now and again. It's not common, but you should do "the checkout" (see stickied post this forum) on any new OR used Ruger wheelgun.

Someone previously posted that a major ammo manufacturer (can't remember which) uses a GP100 to test .357mag loads, and have put hundreds of thousands of rounds through it with no problems at all. That's what I'd call stout.

"...smoothed out the trigger..." If it hasn't had a proper trigger job done, it will need one. Just shooting a revolver does bugger all except put wear on the sear and trigger.
750 rounds of any ammo is nothing to a GP. Or any other revolver. It's used, but not abused.

You will probably find that the GP100 trigger is better than the Tracker trigger. My Tracker wasn't a .22, but it had the heaviest DA trigger pull I have ever seen. It was a great revolver other than that though. You will enjoy both.

yeah i figure if i can learn to get good with the heavy pull of a .22 DA then i'll be extra good with the smoother DA triggers out there.

I suggest you go easy on the disassembly and cleaning. One sure way to ruin a GP100, or any other fine gun, is too much TLC, especially when it involves filing, stoning, losing parts, use of a big hammer to re-assemble, etc.

Um.. hardly worth cleaning?

I have probably.... 35-40 thousand rounds on my GP100 purchased in 1988. I figure about a third of that ammo was pretty warm reloaded ammo.. Usually a full charge of Blue Dot with either 125 or 158 JHP's. The last 15-20k rounds were mostly 38 spl loaded 158's for target practice. Something a bit milder than the hotter rounds I used to load.
