how much would an m40 rifle cost?

From what I've heard it'll run you about $7k to exactly replicate one (same barrel, optics, gunsmith work, etc). You could build yourself a very accurate rifle for under $1k though.
I'm sure the "real" ones are marked 'US Gov't Property' or something similar and not ok to possess.
 
If they never sold any m40s then there may be a problem with the US marked ones. A really good sniper type rifle gets expensive fast... figure $2500 for a scope and $1500-5000 for the rifle.

If you could build a rifle similar to the M40 for under a grand, I would definately like to know the name of your gunsmith. As far as I know, the "M40" has never been available to the public. I saw a program one time on tv and if I remember correctly, they started with a 40X action, but it may have been just a 700 action. Regardless, you can get pretty close out of the box with a milspec 5R, take it to a good riflesmith and have the action and boltface trued and lap the lugs, you will be close.

Sure they are. Go to Remington's website and go to custom shop, M40's all day long. Just better have a healthy wallet. Personally, if I was thinking about such a rifle, http://www.gaprecision.net/ would get some serious consideration.
 
you can't build a rifle like the M40 for anywhere near $1000...

however, for around half the price of an M40, you can get a rifle that is probably just as good, if not better from several custom gun smiths.

tac-ops xray is the route I would probably go..

GAP (georgia precision) like mentioned above is also top notch.

louisiana precision...

there are several builders out there that guarantee 1.2 MOA, or even 1/4 MOA accuracy with their rifles... I don't think you'll get that guarantee from remington.
 
Remington Custom Shop rifles do guarantee 1/2 MOA but my faith in Remington isn't what it used to be.
 
Remington did make a limited run of a "commemorative Vietnam era M40" a few years back. You can still find them from time to time on auction sites.

Well M40=Model 40. I can't speak for present time but as an Army Sniper right about 20 yrs ago the rifles did not come like that from the manufacturer. The Army version is called the M24 and the M40 is the USMC version, both are very similar. My M24 was built right in front of me, from the trigger guard up at the armory depot at Fort Benning. Things may be different now but I can only speak to the then. The specs on the Remington Model 40 linked above is almost identical to the USMC M40, so they may be getting them direct from Remington. I'm not USMC so that is just a guess on my part. Either way, M24 or M40, are built to certain specs for each respective branch the each is tuned to the individual shooter. Custom high end rifles usually come with a custom high end price, rifle and optics easily reach 7000.00. For example, the AR I just built cost over 4300.00 complete, but a .577" 5 round group at 400 yds is sweet. My main question to the OP is how much experience do you currently have and how good of a shooter you are? Wearing out a 3000.00+ rifle to learn is kinda foolish but if you have the budget go for it.
 
My m24 inspired rifle cost under a Grand but it took time. I used my Dads old 270 Remington 700 for the actions. Ebayed a 308 sendero barrel, Bushnell 3200 10X, and a HS stock. Horse trade an old Colt double action 38 for tactical bolt handle , rings and mounts and gunsmithing.
I adjusted the Remington trigger to a very crisp 3lbs. Is it a M24? no but it shoot under 1/2 day in and day out . The Walter Mitty in me is happy so what else mattters?

you can find Mfaux-ties (basically a slightly reworked Remmy 700 with the "M40" stype stock) for around 1100 or so (glass not included), but it won't be nearly as good as the real thing.
 
Tactical Operations makes the Sierra-51 which is an exact as you can get duplicate of the M40A1. I expect they will ask $5-6000 for it.

But the guys are right, very few humans have the ability to utilize the difference between these rifles and a regular old heavy barrel 308 by any namebrand maker.

Mount a serious scope and you will be geared enough not to embarrass yourself at long range tactical shooting clinics which is where you should invest the rest of your money.

if youre looking for accuracy save your money, there are a few other rifles out there that can get you the same MOA or better for half the cost.
Look into the FN SPR, 1/2 MOA out of the box, no tinkering or gunsmithing needed to get it there. Just my 2 cents
