How often do you hunt squirrels?

I live on 185 wooded acres in the Ozarks, and I hunt about two or three days a week. Here we have both gray and fox squirrels, so the hunting is quite productive.

I did a lot when I was a kid, even took some out as a paid "hit kid" back in the day. Got older and as long as I could keep the tree rats out of the house I was happy.

I found I couldn't make them taste as good or as easy to clean as other free animals so I let them go sort of.

I did make a game out of it for them to get old corn on the cobb. Shoot them once and they are gone but to watch them go after corn on a pecan tree is priceless.

Had a great squirrel hunt this morning. Took my Rem 541S and got to the woods about 8:00. By 10:00 I had my limit with numerous others tempting me to take a few more. It was one of those days with squirrels every where. Usually I sit near nut trees and wait, but today I stalked slowly when I would either hear or see one until I could get a decent shot. Hit all but one in the head which means I wasted no meat. They are all in the fridge tonight and I'll sleep well. I was reminded why I like squirrel hunting so much.

I used to hunt them everyday of the season, make some squirrel gravy over biscuits.Nothing better for breakfast!I stick to just varmiting now,its easier. No nettles and sticker bushes to get back to the woods.

Havent hunted them in over 10 years.Dog grabbed the last one I got and ran off with it.That was the last time I was out. They seemingly entertain us now. But,I still wouldnt pass up some fried squirrel.

Can't wait for Saturday. First day of small game here in PA. Got my .22 all sighted in, my spot all picked out and am ready to go.

Here in Arkansas, it's squirrel season from June to the end of February. Now, that's not as good as it sounds. Warm season squirrels tend to have "Wuffs" -- bots in their skin.

We have botfly show up occasionally in the eastern woodlands as well. More prevalent in some areas than others. Nasty critters. Easy to identify after they've pupated. Apparently no threat to humans if the meat is thoroughly cooked, but I've seen some cases bad enough to make me opt out.

I see 4 times as many squirrels when I pull back into my driveway after a morning of chasing squirrels thru the woods...

Damn things laughing at me the whole time!
