Dear THR:

What is the best way to minimize or prevent holster wear on your guns? Recently, I bought a Galco VHS should rig for my Sig Sauer P226 Elite and it seems like its really taking a strong scratching on the top and sides of slide. I am afraid if used a few times in routine it will take off the protective polish on the gun.

Suggestions or ideas?

Thank you

Don't take it in and out of a holster.
Seriously, if you have a blued gun and you carry it, it is going to show some holster wear. There's just no getting around it. However, I don't mind it. Its character.

Buy a better holster, and one lined with smooth leather.

I realize you have a SIG, but if you ever look at a Galco fit chart, you'll see they typically list the same holster part number for a Browning Hi-Power, a 1911 Government Model, and probably Commander. They are all "close", but not that close.

A better holster maker will make a holster specifically to fit your pistol.

In the end, there really is no way to avoid holster wear. It's going to happen.

My 300 dollar kel tec p3at in hard chrome has been in my pocket for 3 years and it looks brand new.

The 'black' is the first line of protection but it is not the real protection. Teffiner/Melinote is the actual penetrative coating on the steel. You can't wear that off. So 'black' wearing off is almost 100% aesthetics.

That said, I would ding the price of a used gun for holster wear.

If you use a holster you will get holster wear. No way to avoid it. You can slow it down with better holster lining. Also use something like Johnston's paste wax on your guns. Apply about once a month or so and it will help slowdown wear and prevent rust

If you are worried about the finish, put the gun back in the box and leave it there.

If, instead, you want a gun that has traveled much with you, rode the river with you, and been your constant companion in a perilous world, then the resulting wear will just bring smiles to you later in life as you remember how a nick or smudge go there years ago.

Holster wear is caused by friction, and dirt acting as rubbing compound.

It is accelerated by dirt and grit in the holster lining.

A smooth lining, or kydex will accelerate wear because the dirt stays trapped on top between the gun and the lining.

A porous lining like pigskin is kinder on the finish, because dirt & grit has a place to hide in the indentations in the lining.

Also, a loose sloppy fitting holster will wear more then a tight fitting hand formed to the gun holster.

As mentioned above, your Galco is a 'One size fits many, but none perfectly' model.

That doesn't help things at all either.

A holster lined in smooth leather, well fitted, and coated with KG-9 or Leather Lightning. That'll keep the wear at a minimum, but a blued gun is gonna wear.
