Dear THR:
A couple of days ago I was confronted with the question by a friend that why should I prefer Sig Sauer P226 Elite in 9mm over some other makes he mentioned in 9mm, like Glock 19/17, H&K P30/USP, CZ Shadow, etc.

After being around and shooting x number of different guns I have my preferences, but to honest the quality with respect to reliability of some top makes has improved so much over the years that it has become simply too difficult to choose except for purely subjective personal preference. Thus, I could not really give him an answer that even I was too convinced with. This is because his top concern was reliability, and could not make an argument for or against Sig Sauer when compared to other top makes.

Guns (apart from their obvious purpose) are like toys to me now. I cannot stick with one long enough without getting bored and moving on to the next one.

Therefore, what would you Sig Sauer guys tell my friend why it is a more reliable than any other top make, knowing the fact that he needs it for SD and range? No heavy combat like use or torture test.

Thank you.

I have to agree. There are many great guns. It comes down to fit and function/options for the individual owner

Sig is an excellent choice.

But, the basic P226 in 9mm is perfect for SD or Target shooting, Going for an Elite, or other "super platinum" upgrade IMHO is a waste of cash.

be safe.

Sig....great quality without the HK price.

I bet your friend didn't mention M&P's or FN's either...some folks have one track minds and refuse to see any other options.

"Glocks and HKs only the best for me, don't be dumb and buy other brands."

I choose the "super extra limited capacity" p220 as my HD firearm of choice. It fits, It's accurate, It doesn't fail me ever.

Lots of good guns out there, from good companies. Buy what suits you well, no matter what others say. function test your guns as much as you need to, to trust that it is reliable.

P.S., there is nothing wrong with wanting a fancier model than the basic stock gun if it offers a feature you like. Looks included

You sound like a gun guy like myself. I love my Sigs, HKs, and Glocks etc. all equally. It's just boring to have one brand when there are so many great weapon systems.
The Elite is a great weapon with one of the best stock triggers(if you get SRT) and it's just an iconic firearm. All top level manufacturers make reliable handguns. I still haven't found one MORE reliable than a Glock but I would not call any manufacturers weapon that you mentioned UNreliable. I would trust them all with my life. If I didn't I would not own it.

I have to take exception to the higher end guns being a waste of cash. Aesthetics are something that some people appreciate, and it's worth money to them. If you consider a pistol to be sort of a shovel that goes bang then you won't care, but others do and I don't see any reason to denigrate their choices.

Just like cars, watches, any other consumer items, it's all up to individual style and taste. And yes, I have a few pistols high on the bling factor, Sig X6 Scandic, CZ75 30th Ann. model, BHP 2 tone Practical, S&W 1911 SC.

And I have some shovels, multiple XD's, Bersa's, Walther's etc.

I agree. I have to find a gun visually appealing as well as functional before I'll spend money on it. Why? Because there are so many good guns out there, why not spend the money on one you want.

That's why I don't own a GLOCK. I shoot them well, I trust their guns in general, think they're a good value, and think they are ugly as hell. Won't buy one unless I had no choice.

My p220 and p229 elite are all reliable tack drivers. I would trust my life to either of them. The srt trigger is sweet and they are fine looking pistols.
I can't say they are more reliable then: my Glocks, xd's, or my m&P's. My Glocks 19 has never failed through many years and many rounds.
All the top tier gun makers are on top of their game it seems right now.
Once you start buying top quality guns, its all really personal preference and what fits you.

why should I prefer Sig Sauer P226 Elite in 9mm over some other makes

I prefer a Sig because of it's reliability, accuracy, and performance. The SRT is a great upgrade to the trigger system as well as the short reach trigger. I just wish they would make it standard. The gun looks appealing and has a great reputation. In a day of poly everything I have confidence that the gun will out live me.
I prefer the Sig over other 9mms because the ergonomics fits me making it a better mate to my hand than others. The other reason is the confidence it brings. Reputation brings a great deal of confidence to the end user. That confidence translates to good shooting. Though purely psychological, it does make a difference. There is nothing like that sunken chest feeling you get when your confidence in a fire arm leaves you as your standing on the range with a gun that won't fire.

I would simply tell your friend that Sig is the one that fits you. His results may differ, but he'll have to try them to find out.

Given a choice between quality pistols from reputable manufacturers with equal records of reliability, accuracy and durability, I will go with the pistol with superior ergonomics and aesthetics every time.

Yeah, looks count, and how the pistol feels and points for me reigns supreme. That's why I prefer SIGs.
