How quickly can you work a Single Shot .22 rimfire?

I shot 40+ chipmunk in a morning with a Winchester 67 single shot bolt action I found in my grandfathers closets after he passed. It was in neglected shape and did not shoot anything super sonic well but it was pretty good with subsonic ammo so with a pocket full of CCI CB longs I tore up some chipmunks one warm sunny spring morning. I shot three without moving my feet, "rapidly" reloading from my left front shirt pocket. Thankfully none of them chose to charge me as I might not have survived if I missed that first first shot. It was a good morning...

How'd you cook 'em?

Sometimes I really wonder if people read the linked article.....me thinks not by some of the comments.
I read some of the commits, more details then the article for sure. Anyway, what North American Large Game has not been taken by humble and lowly .22 rimfire?

Great article OP...Obviously the holes in the skull are all close together but the first one was the one that counted.

In answer to your question, I've never tried to see how fast I could shoot a bolt action....I'm not sure Bella Twin did either...the articles says she shot once, the bear dropped, and then she emptied the 22 she had to make sure it was dead. I imagine the followup shots were more deliberate and she could take her time.

Very interesting, although I've read Bella's story before. She was hunting small game and wasn't planning for such an encounter. Her first shot was from a close enough range, and in just the right place where the side of the skull was thin enough to allow penetration into the brain = dead bear. Got me to thinking about my Model 67 Winchester single shot .22 bolt gun. Biggest things I ever shot with that were woodchucks, and they were head shots, with an occasional second finishing shot if needed. Never timed myself on that but once I fish out the next round it only takes a few seconds to pop it in and close the bolt, then pull back the cocking piece and it's ready. Here's a shot of where the cartridge goes; ... IMG_6897.JPG ... Now I'll have to time myself.

Often quicker than a malfunctioning semiauto.

Reading the linked article, seems like the first shot dropped it, after that she had all the time in the world to make follow up shots.

From the group in the skull, it doesn’t look like it was moving around very much, if any.

This thread should once and for all end the “what caliber for Grizzly?” threads...:)

In a situation like hers, that would REALLY define "insurance shots". Must have been terrifying thinking one shot with a round of 22 Long would do the trick. She was probably afraid it may only be stunned, and was liable to wake up in a very bad mood very soon.

Having no reference, other than the bullet holes, in the skull it’s hard for me to picture just how big a bear it was. Grizzle can get enormous of course, and the browns even more so. Anyway wish the Picture of skull had a know size object Included for scale.
I’m counting 8 bullet holes. Load and shoot eight times. Guess Bella wanted to be absolutely sure Mr Bear wasn’t faking it.

She is braver and has a better set of nerves then I would if I came across a oversized Grizzly like that...
