Last Saturday, I went to our deer least. Decided to take my firearm to check zero and shoot it a bit. Believe it or not, deer season will be here soon! Firearm is a Freedom Arms in .454. Ammo was factory Winchester 300 gr JSP.
I forgot two things:
1. Accuracy of that thing is amazing.
2. That thing kicks like a bay mule!
I reload for it and typically use some 255 gr Hornady XTP magnum bullets over a good dose of IMR 4227. Those are also super accurate and don't kick QUITE so badly. That will likely be my hunting load. Haven't killed a deer with the .454 YET.
I've taken several with 30-30 contender, Ruger Blackhawk Hunter Bisley in .44 mag and S&W model 25 in .45 Colt.
Handgun hunting is a blast! (You get to shoot a lot 'checking zero' getting ready for the season.)
