I was thinking about doing a class 3 surpressor on a 22 pistol. How do I go through the process of getting approved and how long will it take. I know that I have to be a resident, but lets assume that I am. thank you

Unless there is a state or local ban or licensing, you need to find the suppressor or contact a Class 3 dealer who has or can get you one. Then you apply to the (Federal) Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms on a Form 4 for transfer of the suppressor, and pay the $200 transfer tax. Your dealer can help you with the forms. (You have to have arranged the purchase first, since the serial number has to be on the form.)

You also have to get the signature of the chief law-enforcement officer for your area, usually a chief of police or sheriff.

The wait for approval may range from 60 to 90 days, sometimes more.

I suggest you locate a Class 3 dealer in your area to find out about local laws and about the attitude of the CLEO. Some refuse to sign any Form 4, others just sign as a matter of routine.

P.S. Don't buy a suppressor unless the owner is a Class 3 dealer or can show proof of registration with the Feds. Possession of an unregistered one can bring stiff penalties and make you a felon who can never legally own a gun.

if you are in Harris County, supposedly no CLEO will sign for Class III items. you'd have to incorporate to bypass the CLEO signature. if you live in Brazoria or Fort Bend counties, I'm not 100% sure but i hear the Sheriffs will sign off.

let me know if you need any additional information.

thanks for the info,

Spreadfire I am trying to contact a few houston area class 3 dealers and see how I can get a class 3. thanks for the help , I really appricate it.

I should have mentioned that it is still legal to make your own suppressor, after getting approval from the BATFE and paying the tax (Form 1). The process is basically the same as for a transfer. But you cannot make one for anyone else or sell one you make.

spreadfire,

Thanks for the link to your site, it was very helpful. I contacted ammo dump and they told me that there are other ways to get a sign off, such as judges. Do you know anything about them?
