Hey Guys-

I currently carry a SIG 239 in .40, but for all that it is I want to carry a 1911. Why, well it's a .45 and it's slim as hell.........

I would like to carry a Gov't model or a commander, I'm not interested in the 3" 1911's.

But I really want to give OWB carry a try other than the holster showing out the bottom of your shirt I dont see where it would be a ton different than carrying IWB just more comfortable.

So how do you guys do it (holster, cover etc.)?

Thanks for any help guys....
Josh

Milt Sparks 60TK holster & a longer shirt. I buy sweaters, sweatshirts, etc. in tall sizes because they are slightly longer than regular. No problems carrying a govt model.

Get a holster that hugs close to the body and rides high (there are many out there - mine is a custom job by Jim Speidel, thebeltman.net) and I wear sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets, anything to cover it up. In the summer, I wear loose-fitting shirts outside the pants. No problem.

Thanks for the advice so far guys keep it coming, I have a good belt but would like to pick up a fairly decently priced holster (read cheap) to try OWB to see if it works for me any advice on budget OWB that might work.

Check out the Bandera Gun Leather "Beltster". The belt itself is the holster. Its a simple idea, and works very well. I really like mine.

I carry a Sig 1911 in a Serpa OWB holster. Since open carry is legal here, I don't worry so much about whether it's concealed or not.

I think the best OWB holster design for concealment is an open top pancake with no thumbreak. Avenger style holsters don't keep the gun close enough to the body and cause a lump in your concealing garment.

Bianchi "Askins Avenger" high ride

Comfortable and sits close to the body, but was easy to use in matches. I don't know if it's made anymore. Milt Sparks makes an equivalent, as do others.

Any good high ride beltslide or paddle holster and a long, untucked shirt should hide a 1911 with no problem. Need a good gunbelt though. Them suckers is heavy.

Wilderness tactical 5 stitch belt ($40), Done Hume 721OT ($42 from Gunner's Alley).
The holster is a pancake style that rides fairly high, (trigger guard just above belt line) and has a slight forward cant.
I carry it at 9 o'clock (lefty) with a tucked in T-shirt and another shirt untucked over it, polo style ot just anothe T-shirt.

I also have a Fobus paddle which is very comfortable and less expensive than the Hume, but carries a little lower than the Hume, and is therefore not used as much. Still has its place though with a longer cover garment. And talk about easy on and off - no threading of the belt thru the slots.

I use an out of production Sparks Road Runner. I attached a copy of the picture taken of it for me when I acquired it through a For Sale ad here.

The Sparks 60TK is its modern equivalent.

I use a vest for my cover garment. But concealing it really depends on your lifestyle, clothing preferences, and the willing to adjust them both to carry a service sized gun OWB. Its a complete package.
