Make sure it's unloaded. Remove the magazine (if it's got one). Work the bolt a few times to make sure it's empty, and stick a finger into the chamber to make sure there's no bullet - checking by feel, here. If you like, you can lock the bolt back and look down the muzzle - only AFTER finger checking/magazine removal.

Is it bolt action?
Lever action, if lever top or side eject?

Kit consists of bore guide, patches, metal bristles, cotton guide (attaches to bore).
Gun I'm cleaning is a Rem Single Bolt700 and Rem 12GA Pump Shotgun.
I tried cleaning and got a green residue on the patches, what could that be.
I got this residue when i cleaned with hoppes 9.

do you still need a bore guide/rode guide if you are cleaning from the breach ala a bolt action gun? or is taht for onyl protecting the crown when cleaning from the front ala a revolver? I have one for my 7mm remmag but I never bothered for my bolt action 22s. What is the proper name of the cone thingie to protect the crown when cleaning from the muzzle?
what is a cotton guide?
how come when I parroze the gun cleaning aisle in the sporting goods section, all I see are a ton of cleaners. brush tips, jags, rods, etc, but never any bore guides or muzzle protectors?. any good place on line to get bore guides and muzzle protectors?

The green residue on the patches is copper fouling. When the solvent reacts with the copper fouling, it turns green. Keep cleaning until the patches come out clean, with no signs of black (carbon/powder fouling) or green/blue (copper/bullet jacket fouling).
Do you have the instruction manuals for the 700 rifle and the shotgun? If not, both of them (assuming the shotgun is an 870) are available for download/printing at www.remington.com
These manuals will outline the cleaning procedures for each firearm.
