How to get into guns/shooting for someone with no experience?

It's good to see another person interested in firearms, gregr507. Since you live in central Indiana, you should have no problem locating an instructor. As others have said, check the NRA instructors list for your area, and call a few to find out who will be offering the "basics" classes.

A Basic Instructor may well even provide firearms for those initial classes. IOW, don't worry about renting / buying a firearm yet--wait until you have a sense of what they are like.

In the meantime, do the Remington online work, to get oriented.

Good luck with your interest, and check back in here to keep us posted.

There is a gun shop with an indoor range near me that often tutors beginners, especially women for a small fee. Most would do it for nothing to get you pointed in the right direction. If you were near me, I'd take you out and you could shoot anything I have that I shoot. I suggest you get a 22 rifle or revolver first. Revolvers are less intimidating as you can see all the rounds and how the thing operates quite easily to make you more comfortable. It won't take you long before you are offering advice here at THR. :)

The hunter safety course is a good suggestion as they usually will have a few guns there for show and tell purposes. I would also suggest you get a new gun so that it has the manual with it.
