I have noticed that all guns and the metal that they are made off give off a certain smell. This is a very faint smell by the way. I don't think any of my guns are odorless, but I'm specifically talking about my glock 19.
I can smell the metal whenever I do something with it, and it even rubs off on my hands. Can do something to get rid of the smell? Yes, I know this is not a normal post and some people actually like the smell.
I also know this is pretty trivial but please help/educate me.

Thanks for looking at my post.

Gun smell is certainly offensive to some people.

You have four options.

1. Stop laying it in your lap a buy a nice smelling leather holster to put it in.

2. Throughly clean it with Pine-Sol & hot water.
(Then it will smell more like a urinal in a cheap movie rest room.)

3. Start smoking a pack of cigs a day and you won't smell it any longer.

4. Sell it and buy something you do like to smell.
(But, you will have to be the judge of what you do like to smell.)

Sorry, but that's all I got.

Oils, grease, and sometimes metal has a smell to it. I really don't call my guns tools like many on the net do, but my tools smell like metal too. I grew up with tools and guns so I never thought much about it.

The only answer I got is to keep your guns in a safe and you probably won't smell them.

#4.
Are you implying there are metal guns that smell good? Or is this whole response sarcasm?

Maybe both?

As a machinist and gunsmith for 50 years?
Metal doesn't have an offensive smell by itself.
And I must admit, I couldn't smell it if it did.

You must have the nose of a bird dog to smell a gun laying in your lap!!!

TSA should hire you for airport screening!! :D

If you can smell a gun, it might be the cleaning solvent or oil you are using.
Check into that.

I can smell metals, and even taste them at times (such as the metallic tasted I get in spaghetti if I twirl it in a spoon with my fork, which I don't care for.)

But, I've never been bothered by the smell of my guns. However they usually have enough oil in/on them that I smell that instead, and I actually kind of like that smell.

I doubt there's much you can do, since whatever you use to try to eliminate the scent will probably have an equally-offensive one of its own..

Probably more the cleaning/oil that you’re using. I’ve never noticed an aroma myself. But then about the only thing I can smell is sewer gas and the stuff that my daughter thinks is perfume.

Haha, no I don't like touching people like they do. No doubt certain chemicals and oils can be offensive,
but I have only ran about 200 rounds through the glock and I haven't cleaned it yet(I know I should).
It's not an offensive smell by any means, I can simply smell the metal :p

Just curious is becoming a gunsmith a trade you go to school for or.....
and how do you get to work for the big companies like Smith or Mossberg?

Simple solution: Hydrogen peroxide destroys odors like nothing else. You know that persistent smell that gasoline leaves on your hands, that won't wash off? Kills it instantly. Mix 50/50 with water, and be quick to remove it so you don't damage the steel.

Becoming a gunsmith?

Yes, there are trade schools.

Mossberg & S&W don't hire gunsmiths.
They hire young people who can operate CNC machines.

The only gunsmiths they have are senior employes who have worked there in less skilled jobs and worked their way up the food chain into the warranty repair department replacing factory parts with factory parts.
That is not Gunsmithing.

The S&W Custom shop actually does have some gunsmiths worthy of the name.
But they are senior employees who worked their way up on the assembly lines through years of boring work on the lines.

BTW: None of them are offended by the smell of guns, oils, solvents, or machine tool cooling fluids either.
So you will have to work on that first.

I just grabbed a 3-week-old Glock to see if I could catch this scent of yours. Nope, mine smells slightly of mint.

There is a bit of powder residue scent because I haven't cleaned the bore since firing it , but that is a burned carbon/fireworkish smell, not metallic to me.

I think you should just clean your gun. A lot of what people think of as "metallic" scents are actually grease and oil scents, so maybe you are catching a trace of the lube big G daubs on guns before they leave the factory. If you don't like it use something like Frog Lube (minty) instead.

Maybe he shot some of that nasty Russian ammo that smells like somebody peed on the campfire while you were making Some-Mores??

I love the smell of gun oil in the morning!

Hey Yeagers, do you like the smell of licorice? Not that phony Red Vines garbage, but real, black licorice? Then try Ballistol. Your Glock will smell like candy, instead of like a Glock.

Tula? Brown Bear? Nope to either, but they do tend to leave a lot of unburned gunpowder flying out the barrel on my other guns.
I have been experimenting between the 115gr and 124gr in Federal and Fiocchi, accuracy and recoil wise.

Try a little Tri-Flow lubricant spray.

It smells like Bananas! ;) :D

be safe
Tri-Flow lubricant spray, Ballistol, (Hydrogen peroxide), Frog Lube, Hoppe's #9.
Out of all the websites Tri-flow looks the most promising/economically sound with Hoppes coming in second. Nice job Sauer.

Still pondering the original post. I thought everyone here loved the smell of blue steel, walnut, Hoppes #9 and CLP.

Oh wait ... polymer ... never mind.

I'm still pondering the OP too.
Some things you can't get out of your mind, no matter how hard you try.

But I understand perfectly!

I can't stand the smell of the mold release spray they use to mold Tupperware-Ware either.

I can smell it in my lap while eating my oat-meal.

Probably the same mold release spray Glock uses.

Odd indeed....

Only time ive ever had a gun that smelled was when I fell and dropped my Shotgun in a marsh.

Then again, it could have just been the stench radiating from me.
