My Beretta 96D has never had a failure of any kind. I simply inserted a brand new Mec-gar magazine and the now it consistently fails to go into battery on the first round... :banghead:

Mec-Gar is Beretta's OEM mag supplier. Your original mag springs and the gun's recoil spring wore at similar rates while you were shooting all those trouble free rounds. If you haven't replaced the recoil spring that's likely the cause of your problem. The old recoil spring cant overcome the max tension the new mag spring is putting on the round of a full mag. I'm thinking your recoil spring may be past due for replacement, so give that a try.

It does say made in Italy on it. The funny thing is I bought a "factory" Beretta mag along with the mec-gar and it has no issues. I need to change out that spring anyway and see what happens.

Cheaper Than Dirt has a nice parts kit for 92/96's for 25 bucks or so. 25 pieces, including the trigger and hammer.

Your Mec-Gar mag may have a little heavier spring than what Beretta specifies in their OE mags. $25 for a spares kit with hammer & trigger and a spring you need anyway is just good insurance.

You may also want to check both the follower and feed lips of the Mec-Gar mag against your Beretta marked mags. They have goood quality control, but it's possible that the wrong follower was supplied, or (unlikely, but could still happen) that the feed lips are out of spec.

Of interest Mec-Gar is based in Italy and supplies, or has supplied, the OE mags to almost every major handgun maker. I had a NIB Ruger P95 in the shop tonight that shipped with the normal two mags; one of which left the factory with the follower in backwards. I of course had to disassemble it and reinsert the follower in the proper orientation. Things do slip thru at times.

The only thing I did so far to compare, was put some calipers on the feed lips and they look the same. The follower on the mec-gar seems to want to nose-dive pretty easily in the mag body when you press on the front of it. The other three mags don't seem to do that.

If you can disassemble the mags you you'll be able to look at the followers side by side. Possibly old stock and they have an improved follower now (I have no idea on this); or a good possibility that either a) it's Beretta 92 follower in your 96 mag, or b) the follower in your 96 mag is for a different make of gun entirely. If the followers are significantly different just return / exchange the mag and let them know why it needs to go back to the supplier.

I'll have a look at that when I get back home.

Thanks, I appreciate the information and help. It's just aggravating because that was the only pistol I had that never had a failure till now.

Edit: Actually, the two Sistema Colts I rebuilt have never had a failure either, nor the CZ-82's from Aim. Not a lot of rounds through them yet but it looks promising.

My first Sistema has 300 rounds through it with only the slide failing to stay open with the GI Spec mags I bought on eBay... Aftermarket mag issue there.
