Sign him up for a lobotomy.

What are you going to do, sit down with a criminal who would kill you without batting an eyelash and share a cup of coffee while the police take 5 minutes to come to your house?

I actually had an anti-gun whacko tell me, in response to a similar question (What would you do if a knife-wielding thug broke into you house and threatened you and your wife?), "I'd try to engage him in conversation to help him determine why he was so angry. I'd offer him a cup of coffee and sit down at the table with him." Can you believe it? He then asked me what I'd do in a similar circumstance. I told him I'd shoot twice, evaluate, reengage and reload as necessary. He wasn't very amused.

Self-defense is NOT vigilantism!

Did he say he'd do that before wetting his pants, or afterward?

I can't remember very much of what people near me say, as I choose to not listen to it if I don't have to, but the things they say about guns, owning guns, and shooting guns, is ridiclous. You would have a hard time explaining the you have a firearm to anyone without them being surprised, angry, threatened, or all three. So any logical response to their questions and irrational arguments just goes over their heads, so I have pretty much give up arguing with anyone anymore.

Ask how they are 100% sure they will have access, opportunity and time to call the police whilst mid-violent crime?

That's without even starting to get into if/when they show up.

My local fire department is a few miles away. I have several fire extinguishers.

The police are much, much farther away than the fire department :what:

Ask this question:

When was the last time you've heard on the news, that, police officer(s) stopped rape/murder/burglary/beating that was JUST ABOUT TO HAPPEN. Fortunately XXPD was there on the scene to save the innocent victims.

The police are not unreliable.

I think for the most part they are reliable

Reliability may be relative, but consider this:

If you had to choose a firearm for self-defense, would you rather have one that fails to fire 1 in 10 opportunities, or one that fails to fire 1 in 100 opportunities. One firearm is more reliable than the other, but both are too unreliable for me. I want the firearm that fires every time, that has never failed, or at the very least is statistically near to perfect, maybe something like 1 in 10,000,000 opportunities. So if it fails, I can rest assured that God or the universe hates me, and that it probably isn't really the guns poor design or manufacture.

The police are relatively unreliable. Not only is there some doubt that they will arrive in time to stop you from being physically hurt or killed, they aren't always successful in catching criminals either. Are the police reliable? It's a relative term, but I would say that statistically, they most likely have a failure rate that is unsatisfactory for qualifying as "reliable" protection.

Police do provide a limited deterent to criminal activity. However, most criminals are either to dumb to consider the consequences, or smart enough tp know that there is a fair chance that they will get away with things if they don't dawdle.

"I'd try to engage him in conversation to help him determine why he was so angry. I'd offer him a cup of coffee and sit down at the table with him."
I'd imagine that's kind of tough when the guy's stabbing you in the chest with an ice pick.

If the guy's "angry" simply because you're Black, or White, or Asian, or Hispanic, etc., what are you going to say to mollify him? "Sorry, I'll try to be less [insert race here] in the future"?

Try the JPFO website

Anyone who intends to engage others in discussions concerning whether the 2nd Amendment is still a valuable part of America should buy and read the great "Grand'pa Jack" booklets from Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership. These great booklets will provide you with enough factual information (including the cites) to successfully argue your case.

They also have some DVDs and offer a book, "Dial 911 and Die" which should directly address your question.

I am neither Jewish nor a member of their organization but I have read some of the Grand'pa Jack booklets and recommend them highly. I think I will be including some in my Christmas presents to the kids.
