I am interested in buying an all weather stainless barrel and action rifle for predator hunting. What are some low cost alternatives to subduing the stainless shine?
I've had good luck using the removable spray paint on guns that archery hunters use to cammo their bows. You could also use something more permanent, like krylon and a polyurethane clear coat, if you didn't plan on ever changing colors.
Most stainless barrels I've seen have been bead-blasted, and are already pretty subdued. But if you want, you can always get something like the Gun Ghillie .
Take the barrelled action out of the stock, wipe it down with alcohol to remove any oil on the bbl and action. Use masking tape to close off any area you don't want to paint (like the trigger opening, the bolt raceway etc.) and spray paint it with a primer layer. Then you can use camo paint found at Wally World in the paint section to camo it as you want.
Should you ever want to remove the paint, just use any normal paint remover, wipe the metal down with an oily cloth and you are back to square one.
I have done this many times and never had any problems with accuracy or removal.
Zippo lighter.. it'll blacken that right up for ya.. And when you are sick of the charcoal black, go ahead and use some silver polish, and you'll get the shine back...
Blue: are you looking for a temporary fix that doesn't permanently alter the gun or are you looking for something like automobile polishing compound (or something similar) that would permanently knock down some of the shine?
