All I heard before I got my Encore was how accurate they are. Now that I have one all I hear is how they are infested with problems that destroy accuracy and TC wont really help. Mine is shooting 18 inches high at 25 yards with the iron sights fully lowered. If TC is going to sell the 45-70 the least they could do would be to put sights on the gun so that published loads can be sighted in. If your 18 high at 25 even with a 45/70 your gonna be still high at 100. Iron sights are useless beyond that. Cant figure it, the gun is supposed to be "accurate" and so is the cartridge. T/C claims all barrels will shoot at least 2 moa. Dont have any jacketed bullets on hand to load hotter so I guess next I will just duplicate the original and load it down with pyrodex to slow it down and see where that lands.
How unlucky or stupid can you be?

I shot a buddy's 45/70 H&R Buffalo Hunter last weekend. It shot about 2" at 100, a fun gun. I have no "need" for one but____________ .

You are talking about 2 different things here. 18 inches high at 25 yards may be better than 2 moa. It just means you are not sighted in. An accuracy claim is not wrong just because the sights are not adjusted correctly.
They probably put the same sights on all the barrels regardless of cartridge, or maybe yours got a wrong front sight installed. Put on a taller front sight and go shoot it some more.

From your thread I take it that you are shooting non-jacketed bullets? I also assume your velocity is very slow.
The heavier and slower the bullet the higher your impact will be. It takes the bullet longer to exit the barrel thus it exits later as the muzzle jumps. I scoped mine right away and never fired it with open sights. Speed up your bullets and possibly go to a lighter bullet.
Example:
My 8” 44 Magnum is dead on at 75 yards with 240 grain bullets, a 300 grain hits about 6” high and a 180 grain hits 6” low.

Your suggestions put me on the right track. Being somewhat cautious about the recoil of the famed 45-70 I started with the Lyman starting load for the trapdoor. They publish loads for the trapdoor, the Marlin and the Ruger No 1.
I moved to the starting load for the Ruger and it was above the max load for the trapdoor. With the higher velocity I found I was shooting LOW rather than high and was able to adjust my sights with no problem. As for accuracy I dont know yet and at this point I am relieved anyway because I wanted to fire the heavy cast loads. Thanks for your comments.

FWIW I haven't been hearing of any Encore problems at all, but I love mine! Everything I have shoots fantastically well in pistol or carbine set up.
