For the most part, I shoot alone. I don't particpate in any matches and do my best to compete with myself. This leaves me wondering how well I shoot my .45s and 9mms with factory, open sights, What are others pleased with when it comes to shooting targets? I typically shoot at a 5" B-8 from 20-25 yards and if I can keep them in the black and start a hole in the center, I'm satisfied but will contiue to work on doing better. What is your experience?

With a 9mm I'm about the same as you're seeing. With my Kimber if I work really hard I can shoot a sub 2-inch group at 25 yards. (using an Isoceles stance). I'd say my typical group is 2-3 inches and I've got a few that are around 1.5 (hanging behind the reloading bench. :) )

Have a good one,
Dave

I'm a solo shooter in pretty much the same situation. I shoot all stock pistols at an indoor range and all my shooting is done standing, two hand hold, iso stance. My normal groups at 25 yards average around 3" - 4". Not too many over that but I get a couple under 3" per session (5 shots). I'd like to consistantly shoot 2"-3" groups at that distance. I think that's probably about the limit of my capabilities on a regular basis.

After months and lots of range time I just started getting the occasional sub 2" group with my new SA Mil-Spec with a drop in Nowlin barrel. Makes my day when that happens.

Hey, just sing up for a bullseye shoot at your local club that is a real accuracy test against yourself and the guy next to you. If you want a little faster pace try IPSC or IDPA. These clubs are all over to. These guys welcome new shooters and it is alot of fun too.

I used to just shoot at the local range too. I thought I was a fairly good shot. Then I got started in IDPA and IPSC.

Well.....I was a fairly good shot. But there is a very different dynamic to shooting in "action" competition. While I could shoot straight, I wasn't nearly as good as I thought under the pressure of competition.

Go shoot some competition. You'll become a much better shooter and have FUN in the process. It worked for me!

I have had the exact same experience as far2much. Used to shoot lots of target, now all I do is practice and shoot IDPA. Standing around putting holes in paper is boring now (unless it's my .500 S&W :)). Seriously, competetive shooting completely re-kindled my interest, which basically means I'm broke all the time now :D
