How would you have handled this?

OK so I have a bliss-ninny I work with day to day. It gets worse he's mildly intelligent so he thinks his indoctrination is self born. We were talking the other day about ideals, mores and policies ... I gave him my usual "The feds should guard the shores, deliver the mail, coin money and regulate commerce." He was floored thinking (I'm assuming) that PCP would be coming from the cold water tap.

so ... he looks at me in all seriousness .... he asks.... do you really want someone with a gun to move in next door to you? or even a drug user? or a prostitute? In your neighborhood? Next to your children (I love this point) and their friends?

So I asked him: How many hookers have you met?" well none, that I know of...(this is typical)

How many drug dealers have you met? well one but he was a real psycho.
So having him out of the business might be beneficial to society? ....well yeah ....
Have you ever seen a hardcore heroine addict? Nope, never, around any of those types.

So you agree you know nothing about your principles? ..... I never said that.

I'll lay it out here I know hookers they are good people for the most part .... but they ought to be paying taxes.

I knew dealers (when I was using) they were evil incarnate. They'd kill over an eighth of a mile of territory. With GUNS, those punks. Didn't we used to beat the crud out of each other?

So I'm looking at this sheltered kid and say so you've never met a heroine addict? He says nope, I insist that he has. He swears he'd never, ever. speak to a freak like that.


Here's the kicker: I tell him I'm an addict been clean for 7 years on my own dime.

He's clueless from there .... he seems to be thinking ... how do I turn him?

With people like that, crime will rise whether or not they have a firearm. The only true deterrence is to arm the gentle folk of this country, and to force the courts to do their job and quit playing "Lets make a Deal".

Well I can tell you that I was no angel in my past and it kind of mimics yours but not quite if you know what I mean. Anyhow I have ran into sheltered people like your friend there and have come clean about my pass. Sometimes I get bad reactions, but for the most part I educate them on the subject. Now I have never been arrested or seen the back of a police car unintentionally. What I do is I explain what my thought process was at the time and how I have learned from it and to this day I like to teach other especially teenagers the dangers of such things. Now as far as your friends comment about living next to a gun owner, I would explain to him that statistically he has lived next door to quite a few gun owners and he probably lives next door to some right now. Then once you get him to realize that he will see that all of these years without a "neighborhood war" breaking out that gun owners are not necessarily bad. I have even been surprised to find out that some of what I thought to be my most Conservative neighbors own guns and enjoy to go shooting. In fact I have made more neighbor friends by taking them shooting after they see me one day loading my firearms in the car to go to the range. So just explain to him that he has lived next to gun owners in the past whether he knows it or not and that he happens to be talking to a gun owner right now. You never know he might get curious after seeing that you are a good guy and might want to come over some day to see a gun and maybe even hold one. Next thing you know you will be showing him the basics on the firing range.

I have found that people that have led "sheltered lives" are a good challenge as far as educating goes. Parenting skills involved here." Baby steps", and handling education with" kids gloves" is how to get through to him. Being factual and adding some of your good times mixed in,( target games-etc.), then adding scenarios of protecting ones self/family. All through your educating him,(constant safety info, like a broken record), explain benifits of being self reliant. I hope this helps a little to convert him.

Seriously: a great many bliss ninnies are bliss ninnies precisely because they've led such sheltered lives. One of the most eye-opening experiences of my life was going to work as a prison guard. I'd heard and read about crime and criminals, but didn't understand what they're really all about until I met some. Whew!

Ignore him....life catches up with everyone eventually and his perspectives will alter. I find experience is the best teacher...most of us have to learn about the cold hard facts the difficult way......its just human nature. Look for someone who has had a bit more experience in life and converse with him/her....other wise just reply to his comments with phrases like : " I see things differently...I've been through a bit more than you...as you experience more in life you tend to be more realistic and less harsh in your judgements of others....". Your just more mature than he is !

I guess I agree with Diamondback. I'm a year short of sixty years old, and I really don't have patience for people as stupid as that guy at work. Children, yes. Certain people with strange backgrounds who otherwise indicate educability, maybe. As a general rule, no.
