My bedding job looked a lot like your 1st attempt, and it seemed to work. The Boyd's stocks are somewhat "squishy" when you tighten down the action screws, and there was a lot of slop around the recoil lug. If I had kept that rifle, I would have installed steel or aluminum pillars in that stock, but just the bedding job really seemed to do the trick. It went from a 1" gun to nearly 1/2 that, but what was more important to me was the consistency. 1st shot was absolutely DEAD on after that bedding job. Hope yours is too.

Ya, mine has aluminum pillers. I didn't expect the clearance void under the chamber area to be so deep. That's why my first try was so short , I mixed up what I thought should be enough. Second try was much more like I wanted. Gotta get some different ammo's to try and a set of neck dies.

just get a lee neck die, there like $15.

Finally got a chance to get to the range. Waited this morning till the temps got out of the single digets.
Tried some Wolf steel case 123gr HP
5 shot groups were about 1-3/4"
Interesting pattern though.
First group started out far and walked in

I'm off the grid for the next 3 weeks then I'll go through all the scope mounts/screws

That's about average from the wolf stuff in my experience. Academy sells some steel case HP's they market under the "Monarch" brand that is very accurate out of both my Savage and Howa 7.62x39's. I use it a lot for plinking, zeroing scopes and shooting pigs. At $5.49/box, it's perfect for that. I can't even hand load for that price.

Move the Wolf ammo pack left to cover the lowest hole and put a penny on the upper hole, you have a picture of 1 MOA target. :) Wolf steel case is 2+ MOA anyway, you likely will get better result with better ammo or handload. If your rifle has a light weight barrel, which is typically more load sensitive, you may need to find the ammo it likes. My Howa Mini 7.62x39 has a light weight barrel, with handload, I can get 1 MOA.

By the way, IIRC, at one time Wolf Military Classic hollow point x39 was made in Russian Ulyanovsk plant, good stuff.

After a 2 week vacation / hunt in New Zealand I was finally able get back to the project. After pulling the rifle from the stock I noticed a little barrel contour cut into the lower insides of the barrel channel with several shiny spots. Routed the contour out and reinstalled the action today. Took some more Fiocihhi ammo out to make brass.
I think we're getting closer...

Hope you had a good hunt. How do you like the fiocihhi brass, I heard the geco brass is the same and is cheaper, from where I can get ammo online. I think I will get some ppu sp to shoot up and load.

I posted info on my hunt in the hunting thread - it was FANTASTIC.

Learned something new today.
You can load 7.62x39 into a .223 mag, the mag fits the action, but they won't feed for anything. :what:
