My bedding job looked a lot like your 1st attempt, and it seemed to work. The Boyd's stocks are somewhat "squishy" when you tighten down the action screws, and there was a lot of slop around the recoil lug. If I had kept that rifle, I would have installed steel or aluminum pillars in that stock, but just the bedding job really seemed to do the trick. It went from a 1" gun to nearly 1/2 that, but what was more important to me was the consistency. 1st shot was absolutely DEAD on after that bedding job. Hope yours is too.
